Eagles Look To Remain Unbeaten In Big South, Host USC Upstate Saturday Night

Rock Hill, S.C. – Winthrop women's soccer looks to remain unbeaten in the Big South Conference as it hosts USC Upstate Saturday night on Eagle Field.

USC UPSTATE SERIES HISTORY
This marks the 8th meeting all-time between the two programs and the sixth since USC Upstate joined the Big South. Winthrop has won two straight meetings by multiple goals and is 3-0 at home against the Spartans.

FOOT NOTES
  • Since allowed three goals to North Florida, the Eagles have allowed just one goal in the last three games (290 minutes)
  • Eagles coming off a 2-1 road win at Gardner-Webb as they netted two goals in the final 10 minutes
  • It's the first time Winthrop has been unbeaten after its first two league games since the 2018 team started 3-0
  • So far this season the Eagles are 1-0-2 at home
  • Winthrop is tied for 3rd in the Big South in goals per game and goals against average
  • Freshman Valentina Mosquera leads the team in scoring with five points while Alex Perez, Jessica Gengler, and Anna Kate Highsmith are tied for second with three points
  • Izzy Giarrizzi has now recorded eight saves in three straight contests and now ranks 5th in the league with a 1.17 goals against average and 4th in save percentage (.836)
  • This match is in the middle of a stretch of three out of four games on the road
  • This will be the 341st game in Winthrop women's soccer program history
  • Spencer Smith is in his 12th season as head coach and is coaching in his 200th game for the Eagles
  • Smith is currently fifth all-time in Big South history for victories (nine wins behind 4th)

TEAM CAPTAINS
Senior's Laurin Uptegrove and Bella Hovis have been named team captains for the 2021 season. Both Uptegrove (43 career games) and Hovis (42 career games) have been regulars either off the bench or in the starting lineup in their first three seasons.
BIG SOUTH AWARDS
Jessica Gengler – Defensive Player of the Week
  • Scored the game-winning goal (golden goal) in the 3-2 win over Alabama State in the season opener
  • Played outside back in the game as she netted her first collegiate goal
 
Emma Smith – Freshman of the Week
  • Came off the bench to score the team's second goal for a 2-0 lead
  • Played a total of 40 minutes in the game, including starting the second half

LOOKING AHEAD
Winthrop begins a two-game road trip in High Point on Wednesday, Sept. 29 at 6 p.m. and will then travel to Hampton, Va. to take on Hampton on Sunday, Oct. 3 at noon.
