Brookelynn Thomas each had a team-high nine kills in Winthrop's 3-0 loss to East Tennessee State, Saturday afternoon in non-conference volleyball action.

How it Happened
Set 1 | ETSU jumped out to a 4-0 lead behind the service of Caroline Dykes. A
Morgan Bossler kill made it a two-point game at 7-5 but the Buccaneers continued to hang on to at least a two-point advantage until it expanded its lead.
Karli Shepherd's kill had the Eagles within 13-11, but ETSU responded with three straight points for a 16-11 lead. The closest the Eagles got the rest of the way was four points at 19-15 but the Bucs closed out the set 25-18. The Eagles finished with a hitting percentage of .229 while ETSU hit .278. Bossler led the way with five kills in the set.

Lily Leistiko got the Eagles started by opening the set with a kill. With the scored tied 3-3,
Brookelynn Thomas and Bosser had back-to-back kills. The set went back-and-forth as the team's traded points with nobody leading by more than two points as the set was 14-14. ETSU reeled off four straight points to open up an 18-14 lead but the run ended as Bossler and Thomas stuffed the attack by Asia Mattress. Winthrop was within three at 20-17 but five straight points by the Bucs finished off the set 25-17. In the second set alone there were eight ties and three lead changes.
Set 3 | Winthrop led 3-1 early and ETSU fought back to 6-6.
Olivia Blackketter's kill put the Eagles in front, a lead they held until the set was tied 23-23. Winthrop pushed its lead to five points on a couple of occasions (15-10, 21-16, 22-17) and as much as six points at 22-16 after a kill by Thomas. ETSU regained momentum as Josannah Vazquez had three kills during a 5-0 run to end the set and give the Buccaneers the win.
