Women's Soccer Completes Road Trip At Wofford Sunday

Rock Hill, S.C. – Winthrop women's soccer wraps-up a three-game road trip on Sunday, Sept. 12 when it travels to Spartanburg, S.C. to take on Wofford College.

WOFFORD COLLEGE SERIES HISTORY
This marks the 7th meeting all-time between Winthrop and Wofford as the all-time series is even at 3-3. The last meeting came in 2019 in Rock Hill as the Eagles fell 3-2. The Terries have won two of the last three meetings.

GLANCE AT THE EAGLES
Eagles look to avoid a third straight loss and grab their first road win of the season. Coming off a 3-1 loss at North Florida as Alexandra Perez scored the lone goal for the Eagles, the first of her collegiate career. Freshman Valentina Mosquera leads the team in scoring with three points while six different Eagles have scored a goal this season.
This will be the 338th game in the history of Winthrop women's soccer. Head coach Spencer Smith (12th season) is coaching in his 197th game for the Eagles. He is currently fifth all-time in Big South history in victories.
TEAM CAPTAINS
Senior's Laurin Uptegrove and Bella Hovis have been named team captains for the 2021 season. Both Uptegrove (38 career games) and Hovis (47 career games) have been regulars either off the bench or in the starting lineup in their first three seasons.
READY TO RETURN HOME
Following the game at Wofford, the Eagles return home to open their Big South Conference slate on Sept. 18 against Longwood at 1 p.m. The Eagles are unbeaten at home so far this season at 1-0-1.
BIG SOUTH AWARDS
Jessica Gengler – Defensive Player of the Week
  • Scored the game-winning goal (golden goal) in the 3-2 win over Alabama State in the season opener
  • Played outside back in the game as she netted her first collegiate goal
 
Emma Smith – Freshman of the Week
  • Came off the bench to score the team's second goal for a 2-0 lead
  • Played a total of 40 minutes in the game, including starting the second half

UP NEXT
Eagles begin their Big South Conference slate on Saturday, Sept. 18 at 1 p.m. against Longwood. The game will be part of a doubleheader with the men's team who will take on Georgia State at 5 p.m.
