Eagle Volleyball Wraps-Up Play At Classic City Clash Saturday Afternoon

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Athens, Ga. – Winthrop volleyball fell 3-0 to Georgia and 3-1 to Morehead State as it wrapped-up its opening weekend Saturday afternoon at the Classic City Clash in Athens, Ga.

How it Happened
 
Set 1 | Georgia jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead and the led 5-1. The Eagles reeled off four straight points behind kills from Brookelynn Thomas, Morgan Bossler and Alayna Jansky to tie the set at 6-6. The teams went back-and-forth until the Bulldogs gained a 12-9 lead. Winthrop scored the next six points to take a 15-12 lead. The set was tied 19-19 when Georgia scored four straight for a 23-19 lead. Winthrop tried to close the gap and did so at 24-23 but a kill by Amber Stivrins gave Georgia a 25-23 win. Thomas led the Eagles with four kills in the set.
 
Set 2 | It was an early 3-1 lead for Georgia, but Winthrop responded with a 7-3 run for an 8-6 advantage. The run was capped off by a kill from Isabel Schaefbauer. The set remained tight and tied 12-12 when Georgia built a three point cushion at 15-12. Winthrop came back to pull within a point at 17-16 after a kill from Bossler. Georgia continued to hold on to a 3-4 point advantage and finished the set off with a 25-21 win. Jansky had a team-high four kills in the set.
 
Set 3 | Jansky got the Eagles started in the third set with a kill for the first point (1-0). The score was tied at 6-6 when Georgia took advantage of a couple of hitting errors by the Eagles and opened a four-point lead at 10-6. Georgia opened up a 20-12 lead but the Eagles closed the gap in the end as it fell 25-19.

  • Winthrop finished the match with an attacking percentage of .115 while holding Georgia to .194
  • Georgia had a slight edge in total blocks, 14-12

How it Happened
 
Set 1 | Morehead State jumped out to a 6-3 lead but Winthrop tied the set at 7-7. Winthrop wasn't done as it used a 7-1 run for a 10-7 advantage. The teams traded points off and on until the set was tied at 14-14. Morehead Setate used a 4-0 run for an 18-14 cushion. Winthrop trailed 21-19 and even trailed 23-20 but grinded its way back to take a 24-23 lead. Morehead State scored the final three points to take the set 26-24. Winthrop had five blocks in the set.
 
Set 2 | Winthrop was up 5-0 early and Morehead State responded with four consecutive points to pull within one. Trailing 6-5, Morehead State went on a 3-0 run for an 8-6 lead. Morehead State led 10-9 when it used another run for its largest lead of the set at 14-9. Morehead State went on to take the set 25-14.
 
Set 3 | Winthrop stayed alive by claiming the set 25-22. Morehead State led for the majority of the set but the Winthrop stayed within distance and trail 18-15 used a 7-2 run for a 22-20 lead. Morehead State then tied the set at 22-22 but three straight kills by Karli Shephard gave Winthrop the set. Shephard had six kills in the set and Jana Owens had eight digs.
Set 4 | Winthrop was out to an early 2-0 advantage but Morehead State battled to lead 5-3. It was a 9-8 lead for Morehead State when it used a 10-3 run to open things up. Winthrop scored three of the final four points of the set but fell 25-18. Bossler had two solo blocks in the set.

Up Next
Winthrop will be back in action next weekend as it travels to Charlottesville, Va. for a tournament hosted by the University of Virginia. Winthrop will open up the weekend on Friday, Sept. 3 by facing Akron at 11:30 a.m. and William & Mary at 4:30 p.m. The Eagles will then face the host Cavaliers on Saturday, Sept. 4 at 2 p.m.
