Rock Hill, S.C. – Winthrop women's soccer heads to the Shenandoah Valley in hopes of remaining unbeaten as it takes on VMI Saturday afternoon.
VMI SERIES HISTORY
This is a former matchup of two Big South Conference league members It marks the 14
th meeting all-time as the Eagles hold an 8-4-1 lead in the series. All 13 meetings came during VMI's time in the Big South as this will be the first non-conference matchup in the series. The last meeting came in 2013 in Lexington, Va. as the Eagles earned a 4-0 victory and have won the last five meetings.

GLANCE AT THE EAGLES
Coming off a 2-2 draw against Appalachian State during a midweek matchup at home. The Eagles trailed at halftime before tying the game in the 55
th minute on
Valentina Mosquera's first collegiate goal. Just over 10 minutes later the Mountaineers took a 2-1 lead but Winthrop forced overtime on a goal by
Erika Brown off a set piece in the 90
th minute.
Eagles are unbeaten after two games for the first time since 2018 when the team was 1-0-1. It's also the last time the team was unbeaten after three games (2-0-1). At 1-0-1, the Eagles and Radford are the only unbeaten schools in the league.
After the opening week of women's soccer, Mosquera is tied for second in the Big South in scoring at 1.5 points per game. Through two games the Eagles have five goals with all five come from different players, four of which were their first collegiate goals.
This will be the 337
th game in the history of Winthrop women's soccer. Head coach
Spencer Smith (12
th season) is coaching in his 196
th game for the Eagles. He is currently fifth all-time in Big South history in victories.
TEAM CAPTAINS
Senior's
Laurin Uptegrove and
Bella Hovis have been named team captains for the 2021 season. Both Uptegrove (38 career games) and Hovis (47 career games) have been regulars either off the bench or in the starting lineup in their first three seasons.
YOUTHFUL LINEUP
Through two games the Eagles have started seven underclassmen that includes three freshmen.
Lily Meisten and
Adelle Pruitt have anchored the defense at center back. Freshmen
Valentina Mosquera and
Emma Smith have come off the bench to score their first collegiate goals. The other three goal scorers have been sophomore's
Katy Feskorn,
Jessica Gengler and
Erika Brown. All six freshmen field players have seen at least 51 minutes or more in the two games and Meisten has played a team-high 212 minutes.
BIG SOUTH AWARDS
Jessica Gengler – Defensive Player of the Week (Aug. 23)
- Scored the game-winning goal (golden goal) in the 3-2 win over Alabama State in the season opener
- Played outside back in the game as she netted her first collegiate goal
Emma Smith – Freshman of the Week (Aug. 23)
- Came off the bench to score the team's second goal for a 2-0 lead
- Played a total of 40 minutes in the game, including starting the second half

Winthrop will have a week off from game action before heading to Jacksonville, Fla. on Sept. 5 to take on North Florida at 1 p.m.
