GLANCE AT THE EAGLES
The season opened with an exciting 3-2 victory in double overtime over Alabama State. It was the first time since 2013 the Eagles won a season-opener, which is also the last time the Eagles were 2-0. Sophomore Jessica Gengler netted her first collegiate goal in overtime for the golden goal. Winthrop led 2-0 in the second half when Alabama State forced overtime with two goals in a four minute span. Freshman Emma Smith made an impression in her first collegiate game as she scored in the 62nd minute for a 2-0 lead.
Angelica Castro had a hand in the final two goals of the match for the Eagles. In the 62nd minute, Castro received a pass off a turnover and immediately attacked the Alabama State defenders. After dribbling by a couple of defenders she played a ball into open space for Smith, who buried the shot for a goal. In overtime, Castro chased down a service that was too far and played the ball back to Gengler as she trailed the play. Katy Fescorn also scored her first collegiate goal as she gave the Eagles a 1-0 lead in the 33rd minute. Fescorn was set up at the near post on a some good work and nice delivery from freshman Valentina Mosquera.
This was the first overtime win since defeating High Point on Oct. 13, 2018 in overtime, 2-1 and it was the first double overtime win since Sept. 7, 2017 when the Eagles escaped 1-0 at South Carolina State. In three of the last five games the Eagles have now gone to double overtime.
This will be the 336th game in the history of Winthrop women's soccer. Head coach Spencer Smith (12th season) is coaching in his 195th game for the Eagles. He is currently fifth all-time in Big South history in victories.
TEAM CAPTAINS
Senior's Laurin Uptegrove and Bella Hovis have been named team captains for the 2021 season. Both Uptegrove (38 career games) and Hovis (47 career games) have been regulars either off the bench or in the starting lineup in their first three seasons.
YOUTHFUL LINEUP
In Friday's season-opening win over Alabama State, Winthrop started seven underclassmen (three freshmen). Freshmen Lily Meisten and Adelle Pruitt both started in the back and were the only field players to play all 103 minutes. Anna Kate Highsmith finished with 76 minutes played in her first start and was second on the team with four shots. Off the bench, three more freshmen made their debut as Emma Smith scored a goal in 40 minutes of action, Valentina Mosquera had an assist in her 36 minutes and Abbie McCrea played 27 minutes and had one shot.
Of the eight players off the bench, six were underclassmen. In total the Eagles played 19 players with 13 of them underclassman.
