Eagles Drop Series Opener To Longwood Friday Night

ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Eagles dropped the series opener to Longwood Friday night, 16-7.
 
A string of pinch hitters for Winthrop late in the game got to Longwood's bullpen in the 8th, plating five runs off Nathaniel Brezner-Mendoza, but the offensive surge came too late. The Eagles fall to 15-25 overall, with a 12-19 mark against Big South opponents.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Hayden Harris going the Lancers on the board in the top of the 1st, coming home on a wild pitch to put the vistitors up, 1-0.
  • The Lancers put up another three runs in the top of the 2nd, highlighted by an RBI double off the bat of Jack Schnell, 4-0.
  • Winthrop got on the board in the bottom of the 2nd when Spencer Yankle launched a solo shot over the left field wall to lead off the inning, 4-1.
  • Longwood kept piling on the runs, breaking the game open in the top of the 3rd, plating five runs. Tyler Jones' day was done after 2.1 innings pitched, striking out one and giving up seven runs.
  • The Lancers would hold Winthrop scoreless in the third, fourth and fifth while putting up one run in the top of the 4th, three in the 5th and another in the 6th.
  • Bryan Petta held the Lances scoreless in the top of the 8th inning, their only scoreless frame of the contest. With one out, Petta hit Michael Peterson and walked Harris in the next at-bat before getting Justin Looney to ground into a double play to end the inning.
  • The Eagles stopped the bleeding in the bottom of the 6th when Ty Hooks reached on an error, advancing to second, while Andrew Jenner came home on Longwood's miscue, making it a 14-2 contest.
  • The Eagles had an offensive surge in the bottom of the 8th with five runs coming across. Ethan Fewell and Will Martin each drove in a pair of runs to make it 15-7.
  • Winthrop's efforts came too late, falling 16-7 in Friday's series opener against Longwood.
 
ON DECK
The Eagles and Lancers will close out the series with a double header on Saturday, May 15. First pitch of Game 1 is scheduled for 12 p.m. with Game 2 beginning approximately 45 minutes after the conclusion of the first contest.
