Eagles Drop Both Friday Games To UNC Asheville

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Winthrop baseball dropped both games of Friday's double header, 12-7 and 9-3. They are now 8-13 overall with a 5-8 mark against Big South opponents.

HOW IT HAPPENED
GAME 1
  • Tyler Jones gave up a lead-off single before sitting down the next three batters to start off Game 1 of Friday's double-header.
  • Andrew Jenner led off Winthrop's half of the 1st inning with a lead-off single.
  • Spencer Yankle the crushed a RBI double to bring Jenner home and take a quick 1-0 lead.
  • With one out, Ty Hooks ripped a double down the right field line, driving in Scout McFalls and Yankle, giving the home team a 3-0 lead after one inning.
  • With two outs, Ty Kaufman singled to center field, scoring Wade Chandler and MJ Lucas.
  • In the next at-bat, with two runners on, Dominic Freeberger homered to left field, giving the Bulldogs a 5-2 lead.
  • The Eagles went down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the 2nd.
  • The third inning was quiet for both team.
  • Asheville extended their lead in the 4th inning. Kaufman was trouble for the Eagles once again, doubling down the left field line, bringing home Chandler.
  • In the next at-bat, similar to the 2nd inning, Freeberger followed that up with a single of his own, bringing Kaufman across the plate. Asheville took a 7-3 lead.
  • The Eagles got two back in the bottom of the 4th when Tyler Baker ripped a double to right field, bringing home Drake Smith and Joey Tepper, cutting Asheville's lead, 7-5.
  • With two outs, Ty Hooks singled to give the Eagles a base runner in the bottom of the 5th.
  • Tepper doubled down the left field line in the next at-bat, bringing home Hooks and making it a one-run game, 7-6.
  • After a quiet 6th inning, the Bulldogs tacked on two insurance runs in the 7th when Sebastian Dunn doubled bringing home Lucas and Freeberger to extend their lead, 9-6.
  • Spencer Yankle walked to lead off Winthrop's half of the 7th, followed by a single off the bat of Dillon Morton.
  • Yankle came home on Hooks sac fly in the next at-bat to cut into Asheville's lead, 9-7.
  • Asheville kept the runs coming in the 8th, when Brandon Lankford jacked a three-run shot over the left field wall to go ahead 12-7.
  • The rest of the game would go quietly and the Bulldogs would take Game 1.
 
GAME 2
  • The first two innings were quiet for both sides.
  • Freeberger singled to left to lead off the top of the 3rd for the Bulldogs, Lankford was walked in the next at-bat.
  • Michael Groves grounded out, advancing all of the runners before Lucas did the same, bringing Freeberger home for the first run of the game, 1-0.
  • The 4th inning brought no changes for either side.
  • Freeberger continued his hit-streak with a single to left field to lead off the inning, followed by a double to right center off the bat of Lankford bringing the runner home.
  • Lucas would single, scoring Lankford from third to go ahead 3-0 after five innings of play.
  • McFalls, Yankle and Morton strung together back-to-back-to-back singles to lead off the bottom of the 6th inning.
  • Hooks flied out in his at-bat to bring home McFalls and getting the Eagles on the board.
  • Tepper flied out in the next at-bat bringing home Yankle, cutting Asheville's lead to one, 3-2.
  • Lucas hit a one-out home run over the right field fence to make it a two-run game once again, 4-2.
  • Kohl Abrams doubled to bring home another run, making it a 5-2 game, before Chris Toost flew out to right field bringing home Chandler to go up four runs, 6-2.
  • After a quiet bottom of the 7th, Asheville tacked on another run in the top of the 8th to take a five-run lead, 7-2.
  • Winthrop got a run back in the bottom of the 8th, with two outs. Hooks and Tepper were both walked before Strauss singled to center.
  • In the next at-bat, Hooks scored on a wild pitch to make the score 7-3 going into the 9th.
  • A four-run 9th inning, capped off by a two-run homer off the bat of Freeburger solidified the 11-3 win for the Bulldogs.
 
ON DECK
The Eagles and Bulldogs will play a getaway game Saturday at the Winthrop Ballpark. Due to inclement weather, first pitch is now scheduled for 1 p.m.
