Eagles Travel To High Point For Semifinals Showdown Against Top-Seeded Panthers

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Winthrop lacrosse is set to take on the top-seeded High Point Panthers Friday, April 30 in the semifinals of the Big South Women's Lacrosse Championship. Opening draw is scheduled for 5 p.m. inside Vert Stadium.

HISTORY VS. THE PANTHERS
The Eagles traveled to High Point on April 10 where they narrowly fell to the Panthers, 17-11. Winthrop was led by senior McKenna Blick who notched a career-high five goals in the loss. High Point currently holds a 13-3 all-time series lead and have won the last six meetings.
 
EAGLES AT A GLANCE
Winthrop enters the conference tournament on a three-game winning streak after posting double-digit victories over Presbyterian, Longwood and Gardner-Webb to close out the regular season.
 
In the last conference match-up of the season against Longwood, Bianca Tedesco broke the single-game assist record with eight helpers in the win. She finished the regular season with a Big South-leading 40 assists, averaging 2.86 per game.
 
McKenna Blick finished within the Top 10 in goals per game, averaging 2.07 with 29 on the season.
 
On the defensive end, Sara McGuire has earned a .435 saves percentage, averaging 7.25 stops per contest. Kimora Bailey won a team-high 63 draw controls, while finishing second in ground balls with 20.
 
The Eagles swept the Big South weekly awards to close out the season with Bianca Tedesco earning Player of the Week, Alyssa Angelo named Freshman of the Week and Rachel Miller earning Defensive Player of the Week honors. This was the second weekly award for both Angelo and Miller in 2021.
 
Winthrop has won two Big South titles, back-to-back in 2015 and 2016.
 
PANTHERS AT A GLANCE
High Point topped off their spotless conference play with a 17-4 win over Presbyterian to close out the regular season.
 
Junior Mena Loescher went off for a career-high six goals in the 13-point win. Abby Hormes, High Point's offensive leader, had a pair of goals and three assists in the season finale.
 
Hormes' 65 goals this season is a team and conference best. She finished within the Top 10 in assists with 18.
 
The Panthers' goalie tandem of Jill Rall and Sarah Zeto finished 3rd and 4th in the Big South with their .417 and .388 saves percentage respectively.
 
The Panthers have won four Big South titles, 2014, 2017, 2018 and 2019.
 
UP NEXT
The winner of this contest with face the winner of No. 2 Campbell/No. 3 Radford in the Big South Conference Title Game on Sunday, May 2. That game will take place at the highest remaining seed, with all the action streamed on ESPN3 at 2 p.m.
