Eagles Fall To Charleston Southern Saturday Afternoon In Three Sets

Rock Hill, S.C. – The Winthrop volleyball team was swept by Charleston Southern Saturday afternoon in three sets (25-21, 31-29, 25-21). This is the Eagles first loss since Sept. 7, 2019.

 How It Happened

Set 1:
Winthrop jumped out to a 6-3 lead over the Bucs. The set was tied at six off an attack error by Colleen Siebold. Winthrop's six attack errors in the first set kept the Buccaneers in it. A 4-0 run for Charleston Southern gave them a 15-11 edge. They would hang on to the lead to win the first set 25-21.
 
Set 2:
The Buccaneers were riding a high after clinching the first match and jumped out to a quick 5-1 lead. The Eagles fought back and tied the game at six off a Paige Reagor attack error. A 6-0 run for Charleston Southern, with half of those points coming off Winthrop attack errors, put the home team up six, 12-6. The Eagles ultimately battled back, tying the contest at 17 a piece off a Brookelynn Thomas kill. The teams went back-to-back tying the game at 18, 19 and 20. Winthrop went up 23-21 and Charleston Southern called a timeout. Out of the timeout, CSU tied the contest up at 23. Neither team would let up exchanging points but the Bucs went on to score three consecutive points and take set two, 31-29.
 
Set 3:
The third set was another close one early on. Winthrop got on the board first off a Nikkia Benitez kill. The third set saw 10 lead changes. The Eagles went up 19-18 but the Bucs responded with a 5-0 run to take a 23-19 lead. Charleston won the set, 25-21, sweeping Winthrop in Game 1.  
 

 Up Next
The Eagles will look to turns things around tomorrow afternoon, Feb. 7, when they get another shot to take on the Buccaneers. The match is set to begin at 2 p.m. and can be streamed on ESPN+.
