Rock Hill, S.C. – Winthrop volleyball will kick off the 2021 spring season with a road trip to Charleston to take on the Charleston Southern Buccaneers on Feb. 6-7. Both matches are set to begin at 2 p.m.

SERIES HISTORY
The Eagles and Buccaneers will meet for the 91
st and 92
nd time in history on Feb. 6-7. Winthrop has dominated the all-time series, entering this weekend with a 74-17 all-time lead. Winthrop has won nine of the last 10 meetings. When these teams met in 2019, the Eagle defeated the Buc, 3-1, at the Winthrop Coliseum, before traveling to Charleston and securing another win, this time a three-set sweep.
WINTHROP EAGLES
The Eagles are coming off a championship season, posting a 24-5 overall record and a flawless 14-0 record against Big South opponents. Winthrop defeated Campbell in the Big South tournament to punch its ticket to the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2006. They faced No. 8 Washington in the First Round, losing the contest 3-0.
Prior to the 2021 season,
Nikkia Benitez and
Morgan Bossler earned Preseason All-Conference honors. Benitez recorded 261 kills, 278 digs and 44 blocks in 2019. She earned All-Conference and All-Tournament Team honors. Bossler led the team in kills (290), blocks (123) and points (381.5). She was previously named to the Big South All-Conference Second-Team and All-Tournament Team.
Winthrop was picked to finish second in the Big South preseason poll. The reigning Big South Conference champions welcome six newcomers to the squad and returns 10 letter winners.
They are led by third-year head coach
Chuck Rey, who has earned back-to-back Big South Coach of the Year honors.
CHARLESTON SOUTHERN BUCCANEERS
Selected to finish seventh in the Big South preseason poll, the Buccaneers are coming off a 14-15 overall season, with a 6-8 mark against Big South opponents. Charleston Southern fell in the quarterfinals of the Big South tournament to No. 3 Campbell.
The Bucs return five upperclassmen, six sophomores and welcome four newcomers for the upcoming season.
Paige Reagor racked up 254 points in 2019, second most on the team, with a .260 hitting percentage. Reagor totaled 107 blocks, a team-best. Rachel Feggeler returns as the teams kill leader, with 212 last season, finishing only behind Brooke Monssen.
David McFatrich is in his second year at the helm of the Charleston Southern volleyball programs.
BIG SOUTH SEASON & TOURNAMENT
The 2021 spring season will be a 16-match double round-robin slate spanning nine weeks from Feb. 3-April 2, with contests scheduled for consecutive days against the same opponent at the same location. This year's regular-season champion will earn the Big South's automatic bid to the NCAA Championship.
