Winthrop Esports Claims First Ever Big South Championship

Rock Hill, S.C.- In just their second year of existence, Winthrop's Esports team won the Big South Collegiate Esports Invitational, presented by Geico to claim the first ever Big South Esports Championship.

The Big South Collegiate Esports Invitational consisted of nine teams from across Big South Conference schools.  The winning team would receive a $1,000 cash price and a spot in the Collegiate Esports Invitational Rocket League Championship.

Winthrop was randomly drawn as the seventh seed, and after a first-round bye, took on second-seeded Campbell in the quarterfinals.  The Eagles took care of the Fighting Camels with a 2-0 sweep which set up a matchup with High Point.  The Panthers also stood no chance as Winthrop's high-flying attack led them to a dominant 3-0 win.

With Wednesday's championship match set to be streamed via Twitch, the Eagles drew the UNC Asheville Bulldogs in the final. Like Winthrop, UNC Asheville had yet to concede a goal in the tournament. Something had to give, and from the onset, Winthrop took a commanding lead.  The Eagles finished off the Bulldogs earning another 3-0 sweep and claiming the championship.

Winthrop now looks forward to the Collegiate Esports Invitational Rocket League Championship this weekend. Scheduling and steaming information for the event are expected to be announced in the coming days.
