Eagles, Tigers Split Double-Header Saturday Afternoon

ROCK HILL, SC- The Eagles and Tigers split Saturday's double-header with Towson taking Game 1, 7-2 and Winthrop winning Game 2, 7-3.

WHAT HAPPENED
Game 1
  • The first inning was quite for both sides, with the only hit coming off the bat off Joe McNamara, who singles to left.
  • The second inning was a tough on Daniel Blair. After getting the lead-off hitter to ground out, he walked Nick Brown before hitting Burke Camper to give Towson two baserunners.
  • Blair struck out Jack McLaughlin before giving up a single to Jacob Terao, scoring Brown.
  • Blair walked Danny Becerra, loading the bases and eventually walking in a run on the next at-bat.
  • Nolan Young doubled to right, scoring three runs to take a 5-0 lead.
  • The inning ended with him striking out Javon Fields.
  • Dillon Morton singled to lead off Winthrop's half of the inning, with Andrew Jenner reaching on an error.
  • Morton was called out at third with Jenner advancing on an error.
  • Hunter Christopher singled to right, scoring Jenner to get the Eagles on the board, 5-1.
  • Both sides were quiet, until the eighth inning when Jonathan Strauss singled to left, scoring Morton, who reached on a single to short earlier in the inning.
  • Billy Godrick would double in the top of the 9th for Towson, scoring Javon Fields and Nolan Young to give the Tigers the 7-2 over the Eagles.
 
Game 2
  • Towson wasted no time getting on the board in Game 2, with Nolan Young homering off Tyler Jones to take a quick 1-0 lead.
  • The Eagles went down 1,2,3 in their half of the first.
  • Jones settled down, getting Towson's Camper to fly out before striking out Brandon Austin and Jake Lysaght.
  • The bottom half of the 2nd was big for the Eagles, with Morton leading off with a single, followed by another single to right off the bat of Jonathan Strauss.
  • Joey Tepper doubled to left with bases loaded, scoring two, putting the Eagles ahead 2-1.
  • In the next at-bat, Tyler Baker flew out to center, scoring Tyler Hooks from third, giving the Eagles a 3-1 lead.
  • The Tigers got one back in the top of the 3rd, with Danny Becerra walking and stealing second and third before scoring on an error while Nate Young was at the plate.
  • Both teams saw action in the 6th inning. Towson's Austin led off their half of the inning with a triple before scoring on Lysaght's single to left.
  • Morton led off Winthrop's half with a home run to extend its lead, 4-3.
  • Mims sat the Tigers down in order in the top of the 7th.
  • Tepper and Baker popped out and grounded out to lead of Winthrop's half of the inning.
  • Andrew Jenner singled to center, advancing Scout McFalls who was walked in the previous at-bat.
  • Jenner advanced to third on a passed ball, McFalls scored, extending Winthrop's lead to 5-3.
  • In the next at-bat, Spencer Yankle doubled to left center, scoring Jenner to put the Eagles ahead three, 6-3.
  • The Tigers' bats were quiet in the 8th and 9th inning. The Eagles scored another run in the bottom of the eighth inning to secure the 7-3 win over the Tigers in Game 2.
 
ON DECK
The Eagles and Tigers will play a getaway game on Sunday, Feb. 28 with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
