Rock Hill, SC — Winthrop baseball opened the 2021 season Saturday afternoon but fell 4-1 and 4-0 to Appalachian State.

WHAT HAPPENED
Game 1

• The Mountaineers struck first as Andrew Terrell led off the game with a single to center
• Luke Drumheller was hit by a pitch and then both runners advanced on a wild pitch
• Two batters later, Dalton Williams scored Terrell with a sacrifice fly to right field
• Eagles put a runner in scoring position in the bottom of the first when Joe McNamara led off with a walk and then stole second with two outs but was stranded
• In the third, Joey Tepper was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on an error
• Tepper ended up on third after a wild pitch with just one out but the Eagles were unable to push him across
• Hunter Christopher led off the fifth and then moved to second on a sacrifice
• Christopher moved to third on a McNamara groundout and then Andrew Jenner reached on an error to put runners at the corners
• Scout McFalls lined out to short to end the threat
• Eagles tied the game in the bottom of the sixth as Spencer Yankle led off with a single and made his way to third after back-to-back wild pitches
• After Dillon Morton walked to put runners at the corners, Jonathan Strauss popped up to first
• Appalachian State made a pitching change and Will Martin delivered with a pinch-hit RBI single to left
• Morton was out at third on a force out as Christopher reached on a fielder's choice but then was caught stealing to end the inning
• Jack Lipson led off the top of the seventh with a walk and moved to second when Alex Leshock reached on an error
• After back-to-back outs, Drumheller stood in and hit a three-run homer to right for a 4-1 lead

Game 2

• Appalachian State scored two runs in the sixth and two runs in the eighth
• Drumheller led off the sixth with a walk and moved to second on a wild pitch with one out
• After Williams struck out, Phillip Cole hit a two-run homer to left field
• In the eighth, Young put the Mountaineers up 4-0 after a two-run single by Robbie Young
• Eagles got their first runner in scoring position in the fourth inning as Jenner singled to left with one out and moved to second after a groundout by McFalls but Yankle popped up for the third out
