Softball Splits DH With Bowling Green Friday Afternoon

Thees Earns 450th Career Win

Rock Hill, SC — Winthrop softball took the nightcap 10-1 to earn a doubleheader split Friday evening in its first home action for the season. Eagles dropped the first game 2-0 as the Falcons scored both runs in extra innings.

WHAT HAPPENED
Game 1
  • Madyson Watson came out strong, starting the first inning with two strike outs, followed by another three in the second inning
  • With one way in the bottom of the fourth, Ansley Gilreath took an outside pitch and drove it to right field to get the first hit for the Eagles
  • Bottom of the fifth, Watson continued to dominate in the circle surpassing her career high tallying 10 strikeouts
  • Bottom of the seventh with one out, Taylor Charlton gave the Eagles some hope doubling to left field but was stranded
  • The Falcons turned things on in the eighth when Greta L'Esperance led off with a single through the left side, followed by a double to left center by Madi McCoy that plated the first run of the game
  • Reagan Willimason singled up the middle scoring McCoy for a 2-0 lead
  • Watson took the loss in the circle, but finished the game with a career-high 14 strikeouts
  • Watson and Bowling Green's Payton Gottshall combined for 30 strikeouts as each tossed a complete game
Game 2
  • The Falcons took the first lead of the game with one run in the top of the first inning
  • Eagles answered back loading the bases when Macy McCall had a leadoff walk, followed by a hit by pitch and another walk
  • Ashley Westbrook stood in and got hit by a pitch to tie the game at 1-1
  • Freshman Kaitlyn Tucker stepped up to the plate and singled down the left field line to score Watson and Lauren King for a 3-1 advantage
  • McCall for the second time led off with a walk to start the second inning and showed off some speed advancing to second on a wild pitch and stealing third base
  • After King and Charlton drew walks to load the bases, Ansley Gilreath came through with a single through the right side to score a run. An error by the right fielder allows another run to cross the plate making the score 5-1
  • Weixlmann continued to hold the Falcons in check and the Eagles showed good defense behind her
  • The Eagles added a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth, starting with a Gilreath single
  • Madyson Watson sent one deep to center field for her first homerun of the season and a 7-1 lead
  • Eagles finished it off in the fifth when Tucker singled, Weixlmann was hit by a pitch, and McCall reached base for her third time
  • Lauren King came through with a bases clearing double down the right field line for a 10-1, ending the game in the fifth inning
EXTRA BASES
  • The last time the Eagles put up 10 runs in a five inning game for the first time since Feb. 21, 2020 when they beat N.C. A&T 17-0
  • Gilreath is now closing in on 90 career RBI (86) after she had an RBI in the second game
  • Gilreath also extended her hitting streak to eight games while McCall extended her streak of reaching base to eight games
  • Watson hit her ninth career homerun and after her career-best strikeout performance is nine away from 300 in her career
  • In the win over Bowling Green, head coach Windy Thees captured her 450th career victory
