Eagles Win At High Point, Earn Record-Setting 17th League Win

High Point N.C. – Winthrop captured a Big South Conference record 17th league win after defeating High Point 71-63, Friday evening inside the Millis Center.
 
The Eagles surpass the previous record of 16 league wins in a single-season set by the 2010-11 Coastal Carolina team and the 2011-12 UNC Asheville squad.

FIRST HALF
  • The teams traded buckets in the early going as Winthrop led 7-5 a little over two minutes into the game
  • Josh Corbin helped the Eagles to 13-7 lead after a couple of triples
  • The lead grew to 11 points when Russell Jones Jr. knocked down a right wing three
  • Ahmil Flowers responded immediately with a three of his own to get the deficit to single-digits but it was short-lived as Kelton Talford finished at the rim after a nice feed inside by Adonis Arms
  • Winthrop hit nine of its first 15 shots in the game to build the 22-12 advantage
  • The Eagles went cold from the field in the final nine minutes as they were just 3-for-18 from the floor but held a 30-29 lead at the half
  • Winthrop held High Point to 35 percent shooting while the Eagles shot 36 percent
  • A big part of the first half for Winthrop was 21 points from the bench, led by Corbin with nine
SECOND HALF
  • High Point took the lead in the early seconds of the second half when Flowers scored on a stick back
  • A Flowers dunk on the break about a minute later put the Panthers in front by three and then two possession later put the Panthers up three on a layup
  • Back-to-back threes from Corbin had the Eagles back in front 38-35 with 16 and a half minutes remaining
  • With the game tied at 38-38, Jamal King hit a three and then went 1-of-2 at the line for a four point lead
  • John-Micheal Wright scored to make it a one point game but a jumper by Jones Jr started a 7-0 run for a 49-40 lead with 11:05 to play
  • After High Point got within five points, the Eagles pushed the lead back to nine and even into double-figures at 55-44 at the 8:11 mark
  • Chandler Vaudrin converted a three-point play with 3:40 to play as he gave Winthrop a 64-52 lead
  • Vaudrin proceeded to score nine points in the final 3:40 to help seal the win
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Eagles shot 48 percent in the second half and finished at 42 percent in the game
  • High Point shot 50 percent in the second half and also finished at 42 percent
  • For the second straight game, Winthrop's bench contributed at least 40 points (44) as it was paced by Corbin's team-high 16 points
  • Corbin was 5-of-7 and this was his fourth game with five or more and 12th game with multiple threes
  • High Point edged the Eagles on the boards 40-38 and both teams finished with 15 turnovers
  • Talford tied his career-best of eight rebounds and he and Vaudrin each had a team-high eight
NOTABLES
  • Winthrop reached 20 wins for the second straight season and the 17th time overall, 13th as a member of the NCAA D1 level
  • It is the 5th time the Eagles have won at least 20 games in a season under Pat Kelsey and the second time doing it in back-to-back seasons
  • Eagles have now won 12 straight road wins, which is the second-best active streak behind Belmont who has won 15 straight
  • Eagles have now won 18 of their last 19 games on the road
  • The win gives Kelsey 183 career victories, which ranks 4th place in Big South history
  • It was also the 110th Big South win for Kelsey, moving him into all alone in second in Big South history
  • Winthrop is now 40-4 in its last 44 games
  • This was the Eagles 599th win since transitioning to the NCAA D1 level
