Women's Basketball Heads To Asheville For Final Road Trip Of The Season

ROCK HILL, S.C. - Winthrop women's basketball will makes its final road trip of the season to take on the UNC Asheville Bulldogs. Tip-off is set for 5 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 19 and 4 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 20.

SERIES HISTORY
UNC Asheville enters this two-game set with a 39-36 all- time series lead in the NCAA Division I era. The Eagles are 0-10 in the last 10 meetings with the Bulldogs, with their last win coming on the road, at Asheville, on Feb. 7, 2015. Winthrop won the contest 57-54.

WINTHROP EAGLES
Winthrop enters the contest dropping its last two games to Gardner-Webb, 68-56 in Game 1 and 66-50 in Game 2. Tori Hall led the way in the first matchup as the old Eagle to record double-figures. She finished the night with 10 points Maleeah Langstaff recorded a team-high six boards. In the final meeting between these teams of the season, Winthrop was hurt by turnovers, giving up 33 points to the Runnin' Bulldogs. Myra Strickland led the team offensively with a 17-point performance, while Tori Hall contributed another 10 points. For the second straight game, Langstaff led the way in rebounds, with six.

NEW LEADER AT THE HELM
Semeka Randall Lay has taken over the Winthrop women's basketball program after serving as Associate Head Coach last season. Randall Lay in a 2000 graduate of the University of Tennessee, where she was an integral part of Tennessee's 1998 NCAA Championship team that went 39-0, averaging 15.9 points a game while earning honorable mention All-America recognition. She was drafted 17th overall in the 2001 WNBA draft by the Seattle Storm and spent four years in the league. Randall Lay brings eight years of head coaching experience with an overall career record of 67-176.

MILESTONE TRACKER
Anika Riley has taken sole possession of 8th place on the program's all-time rebounds list. She now has 732 rebounds in her career. The senior needs 49 rebounds to move into 7th place all-time. Graduate transfer Madison Ervin needs 91 points this season to record her 1,000 collegiate career point. She has made stops at Mars Hill, Cape Fear Community College and Georgia State. Junior Maleeah Langstaff is coming up on her 100th career assist, needing just three more to reach that milestone. 

UNC ASHEVILLE BULLDOGS
Selected to finish 7th in the Big South preseason poll, the Bulldogs enter the contest with an 8-10 record, with a 7-6 mark against Big South opponents. Sophomore guard, Nadiria Evans, was named to the preseason all-conference team. Evans is living up to that honor, leading her team and the conference in scoring, averaging 18.7 points per game. Kai Carter (13.1) and Amaryah Corpening (12.1) are also averaging double-figures this season. Carter leads the Bulldogs on the boards, averaging 7.8 per game, good enough for 5th best in the Big South. The Bulldogs are coming off a 61-59 win over Presbyterian Tuesday night. In the way, Corpening led the way with 22 points and eight rebounds. Evans also scored in double-figures with 14 of her own. UNC Asheville is led by first-year head coach Honey Brown. She served as assistant coach of the Bulldogs for the last eight seasons.
