Strickland Puts Up 17 Points In 66-50 loss To Gardner-Webb Monday Night

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Winthrop women's basketball battled hard but ultimately fell to Gardner-Webb Monday night, 66-50. The Eagles were led by a 17-point performance from Myra Strickland, her 10th double-digit game of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
FIRST QUARTER
  • Anika Riley got the scoring underway with a three-point play when she was fouled on a layup and made her free throw, 3-0
  • Gardner-Webb took an 11-point lead off a Lauren Bevis 3-pointer, 15-4
  • Winthrop went on a 9-0 tear which include triples from Myra Strickland and Maleeah Langstaff to make it a one-possession game, 15-13
  • The Runnin' Bulldogs responded with a 4-0 run of their own to close out the quarter and take a 19-13 lead after 10 minutes of play
 
SECOND QUARTER 
  • Alasia Smith kept this rolling for GWU in the second quarter with a 3-pointer to extend their lead, 22-13
  • A 9-0 run for the Eagles cut Gardner-Webb's lead to just four with 3:38 remaining in the half, 26-22
  • Gabrielle Caponegro snapped the run with a jumper to make it a 28-22 game
  • Tori Hall responded with a bucket of her own, keeping GWU's lead within two-possessions
  • Lauren Bevis hit a 3-pointer with 1:24 remaining to close out the scoring in the half and give her team a 31-24 lead after 20 minutes of play 
 
THIRD QUARTER
  • Gardner-Webb's Alexis Hueston quickly got her squad on the board with a layup just seconds into the half, extending their lead, 33-24
  • Myra Strickland was fouled and made both free throws, 33-26
  • A 6-2 run for the Eagles kept them within arms-reach of the lead, making it a seven point contest off a Sierra Hunter jumper, 41-34
  • A 10-4 streak for the home team gave them a 13-point lead with 10 minutes to play, 51-38
 
FOURTH QUARTER
  • Gardner-Webb opened the quarter with a 7-0 run to take a 20-point lead with 7:24 to play, 58-38
  • Myra Strickland was fouled by Lyrissa Deans and made both free throws, 58-40
  • Strickland scored Winthrop's first five points of the quarter, with a layup and three made free throws.
  • Tori Hall got in on the fun with a 3-pointer with 2:38 remaining to make it a 61-46 game
  • Gardner-Webb's Micahla Funderburk hit a three with 29 seconds remaining to solidify the 66-50 win

THE NUMBERS
  • Winthrop narrowly won the battle of the boards, 40-39.
  • The Eagles turned the ball over 26 times, resulting in 33 of Gardner-Webb's 66 points.
  • The Runnin' Bulldogs turned the ball over 13 times, with Winthrop scoring nine points off those mistakes.
  • 16 of Winthrop's 50 points came off the bench, led by Tori Hall with 10.
  • Winthrop finished the contest shooting 36 percent from the field, 33.3 percent from 3-point range and 73.3 percent from the line
  • Gardner-Webb finished the contest shooting 38.2 percent from the field, 23.8 percent from deep and 69.2 percent from free throw line
 
UP NEXT
The Eagles will look to turn things around when they travel to UNC Asheville for a two-game set on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 19-20. Winthrop is 0-10 in the last 10 meetings with the Bulldogs. Their last win came in Asheville on Feb. 7, 2015.
