Women's Basketball Travels To Boiling Springs For Match Up With Runnin' Bulldogs

Boiling Springs, N.C. – Winthrop women's basketball will travel to Boiling Springs to take on Gardner-Webb on Feb. 14-15. Semeka Randall Lay and her squad will look to build off their thrilling overtime win as they head into this series with the Runnin' Bulldogs. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m. on Sunday and 6 p.m. on Monday.

SERIES HISTORY
Gardner-Webb enters this weekend's series against the Eagles with an overwhelming 21-8 all-time series lead. Winthrop has lost nine of the last 10 meetings with the Runnin' Bulldogs with its last win against this squad coming on Jan. 19, 2019 at Paul Porter Arena, 64-62.

WINTHROP EAGLES
Winthrop split its season series with Radford, falling 72-46 in Game 1, and winning an overtime thriller in Game 2, 63-59. For the second straight series, Myra Strickland scored in double-figures in both contests, recording 13 and 11 points against Radford. In the win, Winthrop was led by senior Anika Riley, who put up a 15-point, 10-rebound performance. This is the eighth double-double of her career. With 13 rebounds this week, Riley moved into 8th place on the all-time rebounds list with 724 in her career.

NEW LEADER AT THE HELM
Semeka Randall Lay has taken over the Winthrop women's basketball program after serving as Associate Head Coach last season. Randall Lay in a 2000 graduate of the University of Tennessee, where she was an integral part of Tennessee's 1998 NCAA Championship team that went 39-0, averaging 15.9 points a game while earning honorable mention All-America recognition. She was drafted 17th overall in the 2001 WNBA draft by the Seattle Storm and spent four years in the league. Randall Lay brings eight years of head coaching experience with an overall career record of 67-176.

MILESTONE TRACKER
Anika Riley has taken sole possession of 8th place on the program's all-time rebounds list. She now has 724 rebounds in her career. The senior needs 57 rebounds to move into 7th place all-time. Graduate transfer Madison Ervin needs 101 points this season to record her 1,000 collegiate career point. She has made stops at Mars Hill, Cape Fear Community College and Georgia State. Junior Maleeah Langstaff is coming up on her 100th career assist, needing just six more to reach that milestone. 

GARDNER-WEBB RUNNIN' BULLDOGS
Selected to finish 5th in the Big South Preseason poll, the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs enter the series against the Eagles with a 5-11 overall record and a 5-6 mark against Big South opponents. In 2019-20, Gardner-Webb was seeded 5th in the Big South Conference tournament after posting an 18-11 overall record and a 13-7 mark in conference play. Lauren Bevis and Alasia Smith are averaging double-digit points this season, 11.2 and 10.4 respectively. Bevis' 11.2 average is 13th best in the conference. Smith is the team's rebound leader this season, averaging 8.3 per game, which is 4th best in the league. Gardner-Webb is coming off back-to-back losses, splitting the season series with USC Upstate and dropping Game 1 against Campbell, 80-57. Game 2 was postponed due to COVID-19 concerns. The Runnin' Bulldogs are led by third-year head coach, Alex Simmons.
