Corbin's Game-High 19 Points Leads Eagles In Win Over Carver College

Rock Hill, S.C. – Josh Corbin led three Winthrop players in double-figures with 19 points in an 83-52 victory over Carver College, Saturday evening at the Rock Hill Sports & Event Center as part of the No Room For Racism Classic.

FIRST HALF
  • Patrick Good opened up the scoring with a right wing three off a pass from Russell Jones Jr.
  • The game remained close over the first five minutes but back-to-back threes from Sin'cere McMahon and Josh Corbin propelled the Eagles to a 15-7 lead
  • Corbin continued to damage behind the arc, connecting on two more threes and with 10:05 left in the half the Eagles led 25-14
  • After a free throw from D.J. Burns Jr., Carver went on a 7-0 run to tie the game at 26-26 with 6:28 left
  • Antwon Ferrell tied the game with a three-point play as he drove baseline and was fouled
  • Eagles responded with an 8-0 run started with a soft hook by Burns Jr. in the lane
  • That was followed by two Corbin triples for a 34-26 lead with 3:47 left
  • Winthrop outscored Carver 10-4 the rest of the way for a 44-31 lead at the break
  • The Eagles shot 57 percent from the floor while the Cougars shot 46 percent
  • Corbin finished the half with five threes as the Eagles were 8-of-18 as a team

SECOND HALF
  • Winthrop maintained its double-digit lead and even pushed it to 20 points with 10:43 to play
  • Eagles led 55-41 when Burns Jr. scored second chance baskets on consecutive possessions and then knocked down two free throws for the 20 point advantage
  • Late in the game the Eagles used a 10-0 run to push the lead to 32 points as Kelton Talford hit two free throws followed by a score off the drive by Jones Jr.
  • The final six points of the run came off a three by Nate Buss and then he dropped three free throws for an 83-51 lead
  • Winthrop didn't shoot the ball as well in the second half (34 percent), but picked it up on the defensive end holding Carver to 26 percent shooting
  • The Eagles dominated the glass in the second half 32-10, including 17 on the offensive glass

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Eagles finished the game shooting 45 percent while holding Carver to 37 percent
  • The glass was dominated by the Eagles 50-22 (20 offensive boards)
  • Eagles did commit 17 turnovers in the game that led to 14 points for Carver
  • Winthrop turned 14 turnovers by the Cougars into 11 points
  • Corbin led the Winthrop bench that contributed 53 points
  • Talford added 16 points off the bench and McMahon had eight points as well as two assists and two steals

NOTABLES
  • This was the second straight win by the Eagles, who have now won four of the last five
  • Corbin finished one point shy of his career-high and tied his career-best with six triples
  • Kelton Talford posted his first career double-double with a career-high in points (14) and rebounds (11)
  • Eagles hit 10 or more threes for the sixth time in 10 games this season
  • Burns Jr. matched his career-high in rebounds with nine, which he set earlier this season at Washington
  • This was the 56th consecutive win by the Eagles over a Non-D1 opponent
  • The bench contributed 53 points, which was the third time this season the Eagles received 50 or more points from the bench
