NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. – Coming off a fantastic weekend that included sweeps over UNC Asheville and USC Upstate, Winthrop traveled to North Charleston Friday evening and came away with a four set victory over Charleston Southern.

How it Happened
Set 1 | The homestanding Buccaneers started off with a 3-1 advantage, but Winthrop went on a 7-0 run to seize the lead, capped off by a
Madison Gorniak service ace. Charleston Southern then closed within a couple points and stayed there for most of the set. A ballhandling error from CSU gave the Eagles a 15-11 lead. Winthrop maintained a lead throughout the set, although the Buccaneers got within 23-22 and 24-23. However, a Charleston Southern service ace handed the first set to Winthrop by a 25-23 score.
Set 2 | Similarly to the first set, Charleston Southern took an early lead. The Eagles battled back to tie the set at seven on a
Colleen Siebold kill, but the Buccaneers surged to an 11-8 lead. A 4-0 Winthrop run, punctuated by a block from
Karli Shepherd and
Morgan Bossler. Charleston Southern eventually came back to take a 17-15 lead, although the Eagles tied the score. However, the Buccaneers went on to take a 23-19 lead and eventually took the set 25-21.
Set 3 | Charleston Southern took the first point of the set, but Winthrop dominated the set from then on. A 6-0 run seized the momentum, although the Buccaneers eventually stayed within 8-6. Another 4-0 run was capped off with a Bossler kill and a 6-0 run shortly thereafter stretched the Eagle lead to 18-8. Charleston Southern managed two more points, but a
Brookelynn Thomas kill gave Winthrop a dominant 25-10 set victory.
Set 4 | The set was dominated by Winthrop early as the visiting Eagles took a 6-2 lead on a Shepherd kill. Winthrop went on to extend the lead to 11-4 and 13-5, but the match was far from over. Charleston Southern stayed within three or four points most of the way, and a Buccaneer service ace closed the lead to 21-19. Leading 22-20, the Eagles took the last three points of the match to secure the conference road victory.
