Eagles Season Comes To An End With Loss At Top-Seeded Campbell

Buies Creek, N.C. – The Winthrop men's soccer season came to a close with a 7-0 loss at top-seeded Campbell in the semifinals of the Big South Conference Tournament, Wednesday night.

Game Recap
  • Camels struck early as Daniel Hernandez headed home a free kick from Kemy Amiche in the 7th minute
  • A nearly identical goal for the Camels in the 18th minute as Amiche again connected with Hernandez on a free kick from nearly the same spot for a 2-0 lead
  • Campbell took a three goal lead in the 20th minute when Amiche finished off a rebound after consecutive saves by Sam Jones
  • Eagles had a good chance in the early part of the second half as they applied some pressure offensively
  • Conor Stephens delivered a ball from wide left in front of goal as Jonathan Foster was on the other end but his header from about 10 yards out was far enough to the corner as Edu Rodriguez made the diving save and held on
  • Campbell found itself in front 4-0 minutes after the Eagles opportunity as Hernandez took a cross off his chest around the top of the 18, dribbled by two Winthrop defenders and then dribbled by the goalkeeper and slotted the ball in the open net
  • Trailing 5-0 in the 55th minute the Eagles had another good chance to get on the scoreboard when Foster passed the ball into Sean Green in the box as he turned and ripped a shot toward goal that was deflected away by Rodriguez
  • Campbell ended up scoring four goals in a seven minute span to push the lead to 7-0

Notables
  • Campbell finished with a 13-7 advantage in shots and 10-4 in shots on goal while each team had three corners
  • Winthrop was shutout in a conference tournament match for the first time since its 0-0 draw in the 2015 championship game
  • Jones finished with three saves while Rodriguez made four in a shutout effort
  • Brigham Larsen finishes the season as the top scorer on the team (23 points), the first freshman to lead the team in points since Max Hasenstab in 2013 with 23 points
