Eagles Look To Keep Pace In Big South At Radford Saturday Night

Rock Hill, S.C. – Winthrop women's soccer is off to one of its best starts in Big South play and looks to keep pace toward the top of the league standings as it travels to Virginia for a road test at Radford Saturday night.

SERIES HISTORY VERSUS RADFORD
Winthrop and Radford meet for the 20th time. The Eagles have lost five straight meetings to the Highlanders, who lead the all-time series 11-5-3. Winthrop is looking for its first win in Cupp Stadium since 2007 when it won 2-1 in overtime.

FOOT NOTES
  • This year's team has a flair for the dramatics and the last game was no different as Anna Kate Highsmith scored with five seconds left in regulation to earn a 2-1 victory over Presbyterian College
  • It was the ninth time on the season the Eagles scored a goal after the 80th minute
  • The Eagles are sitting in second place in the league standings, one point behind Longwood and one point ahead of Campbell and High Point
  • Highsmith leads the team with five goals which is tied for 3rd in the league in total goals and goals per game
  • Highsmith has scored in four of the last five games and is tied for 5th in the Big South in points per game
  • Valentina Mosquera had a goal and an assist in the win over PC and is second on the team with eight points
  • Senior Lauren Uptegrove will make her 50th collegiate appearance on Wednesday while it will be the 49th appearance for senior Bella Hovis
  • This will be the 344th game in Winthrop women's soccer program history
  • Spencer Smith is in his 12th season as head coach and coached in his 200th game for the Eagles on Sept. 25 vs. USC Upstate
  • Smith is currently fifth all-time in Big South history for victories (seven wins behind 4th)

BIG SOUTH AWARDS
Abbie McCrea – Freshman of the Week
  • McCrea led the team with four points on the week in two road games
  • Started the week with a late goal in the 3-2 loss at High Point
  • Followed that up with two assists in the 4-1 win at Hampton
Anna Kate Highsmith – Freshman of the Week
  • Scored three goals in two games to help the team to two victories
  • Scored the game-winning goal in the 89th minute in the win at Gardner-Webb
  • Scored two goals in the final seven minutes of the game in the 2-0 win over USC Upstate
Jessica Gengler – Defensive Player of the Week
  • Scored the game-winning goal (golden goal) in the 3-2 win over Alabama State in the season opener
  • Played outside back in the game as she netted her first collegiate goal
Emma Smith – Freshman of the Week
  • Came off the bench to score the team's second goal for a 2-0 lead
  • Played a total of 40 minutes in the game, including starting the second half

TEAM CAPTAINS
Senior's Laurin Uptegrove and Bella Hovis have been named team captains for the 2021 season. Both Uptegrove and Hovis have been regulars either off the bench or in the starting lineup in their first three seasons.
LOOKING AHEAD
Eagles stay on the road as they'll head toward the coast on Wednesday, Oct. 13 to take on Charleston Southern at 3 p.m.
