Game Recap
- Asheville took a 1-0 lead in the 15th minute as Taylor Gardner received a throw-in with her back to goal, turned and dribbled across the middle of the field in open space
- As Gardner dribbled toward goal she let a shot fly from about 25-30 yards out that found the top left corner of the goal
- Bulldogs went ahead 2-0 in the 36th minute as Madison Carter received a pass on the outside, dribbled her way through traffic and as she entered the box cracked a shot into the left side netting
- Winthrop got forward and created a number of chances in the first half but couldn't break through despite an 8-5 edge in shots
- One of the best chances came in the final seconds of the half as Haley Hocking slipped a ball through the defense as Dee Burnett ran on into the box and tried to beat the keeper to the top corner near post but Courtney O'Malley tipped the ball wide for a corner
- The Bulldogs took a 3-0 lead in the 54th minute when Carter received a pass just inside the box, turned and fired a shot that was saved by a diving Izzy Giarrizzi but Ava Nkadi was there to put away the rebound
- Winthrop finally broke through in the 81st minute as Anna Kate Highsmith played a ball back to Katy Fescorn who then delivered a ball in front of goal that was headed in by Angelica Castro into the right corner
- As the Eagles looked for another goal they were caught with numbers forward in the 86th minute as a long ball by Grace Sloan set Kaiya Boyd with a one-on-one as she beat Giarrizzi sliding in and then placed a shot into the open net
Notables
- Eagles finished with an 11-9 edge in shots and had a 14-1 advantage in corners
- Winthrop finishes the regular season with a home record of 3-2-1
- Angelica Castro scored her second goal of the season, becoming the 5th multi-goal scorer for the Eagles
- Highsmith's assist tied her with Jessica Gengler for the team lead with three
Looking Ahead
Winthrop will now wait for the remainder of the Big South Conference schedule to be completed to see if it qualifies for the Big South Conference Tournament. The seeds will be announced following the action on Tuesday, Oct. 26.
