Eagles Battle Hampton On The Road Sunday Afternoon

Rock Hill, S.C. – Winthrop looks to bounce back after its first conference loss with a Sunday afternoon road contest at Hampton in Big South women's soccer action.

HAMPTON SERIES HISTORY
This is just the third meeting all-time between Winthrop and Hampton. Winthrop has won both meetings and the last meeting was in Hampton as the Eagles earned a 4-1 win.

  • Eagles are sitting in third place in the Big South standings
  • Winthrop features one of the top offenses in the league as it ranks 3rd with 1.56 goals per game
  • Also rank second in the league in goals against average (1.23)
  • Freshman Anna Kate Highsmith scored for a third straight game in the loss to High Point and now has a team-high nine points
  • She's the first Eagle to score in three straight games since Gabi Hull in 2019
  • No Eagle has scored in four straight games since the program's all-time leader scorer Krystyna Freda did so in 2014
  • Highsmith ranks 7th in the league with 1.0 points per game and is tied for sixth in total goals (4)
  • Sophomore Jessica Gengler leads the team in assists and ranks 6th in the league in assists per game and fifth in total assists
  • Sophomore Izzy Giarrizzi is 5th in the league with a 1.24 goals against average, 3rd in save percentage and second in saves per game
  • This will be the 343rd game in Winthrop women's soccer program history
  • Spencer Smith is in his 12th season as head coach and coached in his 200th game for the Eagles on Sept. 25 vs. USC Upstate
  • Smith is currently fifth all-time in Big South history for victories (eight wins behind 4th) 

BIG SOUTH AWARDS
Anna Kate Highsmith – Freshman of the Week
  • Scored three goals in two games to help the team to two victories
  • Scored the game-winning goal in the 89th minute in the win at Gardner-Webb
  • Scored two goals in the final seven minutes of the game in the 2-0 win over USC Upstate
Jessica Gengler – Defensive Player of the Week
  • Scored the game-winning goal (golden goal) in the 3-2 win over Alabama State in the season opener
  • Played outside back in the game as she netted her first collegiate goal
Emma Smith – Freshman of the Week
  • Came off the bench to score the team's second goal for a 2-0 lead
  • Played a total of 40 minutes in the game, including starting the second half

TEAM CAPTAINS
Senior's Laurin Uptegrove and Bella Hovis have been named team captains for the 2021 season. Both Uptegrove (43 career games) and Hovis (42 career games) have been regulars either off the bench or in the starting lineup in their first three seasons.

Winthrop returns home for a midweek contest on Wednesday, Oct. 6 at 3 p.m. against Presbyterian College.
