Eagles Square Off Against Bulldogs In Final Regular Season Contest

Rock Hill, S.C. – The regular season comes to an end Wednesday evening for the Winthrop women's soccer team as it hosts UNC Asheville in a key matchup for both teams.

SERIES HISTORY VERSUS UNC ASHEVILLE
This marks the 23rd meeting all-time between the Eagles and Bulldogs. This series began with UNC Asheville claiming victory in the first six meetings and seven of the first eight. Then the momentum shifted to the Eagles who won seven of the next eight meetings. Winthrop has won two straight meetings and three of the last four. In the last two meetings in Rock Hill the Eagles have outscored the Bulldogs 6-1.

FOOT NOTES
  • Eagles looking to end a three-game skid and put themselves in a position to qualify for the conference tournament
  • Winthrop ended its two-game scoring drought on a Leah Green goal in the 83rd minute against Campbell
  • Greene became the 12th different goal scorer for the Eagles this season
  • That's the most goal scorers in a single-season by the Eagles since the 2018 team had 13
  • The Eagles are led in scoring by the freshmen duo of Anna Kate Highsmith and Valentina Mosquera
  • Highsmith leads the team in goals (5) and points (12) while Mosquera is second with three goals and eight points
  • Highsmith is tied for 7th in the league in goals and goals per game while being tied for 9th in the league in points and points per game
  • Eagles rank 4th in the league in offense with 1.50 goals per game despite just one goal in the last three contests while Asheville ranks 9th at .80 per game
  • Izzy Giarrizzi ranks 3rd in the league in saves per game, 6th in save percentage, and 7th in goals against average
  • This will be the 347th game in Winthrop women's soccer program history
  • Spencer Smith is in his 12th season as head coach and coached in his 200th game for the Eagles on Sept. 25 vs. USC Upstate
  • Smith is currently fifth all-time in Big South history for victories (seven wins behind 4th)

BIG SOUTH AWARDS
Abbie McCrea – Freshman of the Week
  • McCrea led the team with four points on the week in two road games
  • Started the week with a late goal in the 3-2 loss at High Point
  • Followed that up with two assists in the 4-1 win at Hampton
Anna Kate Highsmith – Freshman of the Week
  • Scored three goals in two games to help the team to two victories
  • Scored the game-winning goal in the 89th minute in the win at Gardner-Webb
  • Scored two goals in the final seven minutes of the game in the 2-0 win over USC Upstate
Jessica Gengler – Defensive Player of the Week
  • Scored the game-winning goal (golden goal) in the 3-2 win over Alabama State in the season opener
  • Played outside back in the game as she netted her first collegiate goal
Emma Smith – Freshman of the Week
  • Came off the bench to score the team's second goal for a 2-0 lead
  • Played a total of 40 minutes in the game, including starting the second half

TEAM CAPTAINS
Senior's Laurin Uptegrove and Bella Hovis have been named team captains for the 2021 season. Both Uptegrove and Hovis have been regulars either off the bench or in the starting lineup in their first three seasons.
LOOKING AHEAD
Winthrop could have to sit and wait for the remainder of the league action to finish over the next week to see whether it will finish in the Top 6 of the Big South standings and qualify for the conference tournament. The field and seeds will be announced Tuesday (Oct. 26) evening.
