How it Happened
Set 1 | The early going saw Winthrop get off to a fast start. With the set tied at two early on, the Eagles won five consecutive points with the last two coming on a
Morgan Bossler kill and a
Leah Metzger service ace. Winthrop continuied to apply pressure and took leads of 12-6, 15-8, 17-11, and 20-13. Hampton continued to battle hard, but the Eagles used a
Megan Thoroman kill and a Pirate attack error to take the stanza by a 25-17 score.
Set 2 | Winthrop took an early 3-1 lead in the second period, but Hampton stayed within a couple points during the early portion of the set. Leading 12-7, the Eagles went on a 4-0 run punctuated by a block assist from Bossler and Coleen Siebold. Winthrop then extended the lead to 20-10 and cruised to a 25-12 victory for a 2-0 lead.

Set 3 | The Eagles came out strong in the final set, taking a 4-1 lead that included three combined kills from
Karli Shepherd and Siebold. Hampton closed within three points at 8-5, but Winthrop won eight of the next ten points for a commanding 16-7 lead. A short while later, leading 21-10, a kill by Siebold, a block assist from Shepherd and
Emma Ann Lay, and two
Rylie McMahen service aces ended the match with authority.
