Looking To Keep Pace In The Big South, Eagles Travel To Charleston Southern Wednesday

Rock Hill, S.C. – Winthrop women's soccer looks to bounce back from its loss last weekend as it travels to Charleston Southern for a midweek afternoon contest on Wednesday, Oct. 13 at 3 p.m.

SERIES HISTORY VERSUS CHARLESTON SOUTHERN
Winthrop and Charleston Southern meet for the 21st time. The last meeting came in March as the Buccaneers captured a 1-0 victory in Rock Hill. That win gave Charleston Southern a lead in the all-time series at 8-7-5 The Bucs have also won three of the last four meetings. In the Eagles last trip to CSU Soccer Field they earned a 4-1 victory and are 3-4-2 all-time at Charleston Southern. In 12 of the 20 meetings all-time the games have either ended in a draw or decided by a single goal.

FOOT NOTES
  • Winthrop is coming off a 2-0 loss at Radford and sitting third in the Big South standings with 13 points
  • It was the first time the Eagles have been shutout since a 0-0 draw with Longwood on Sept. 18
  • It was also the first road game in league play the Eagles had not scored (had scored at least two goals in each of the first three road games)
  • Eagles are 3-4 on the road this season and 2-3 in league play
  • Freshman Anna Kate Highsmith leads the team in scoring with 12 points (5g, 2a)
  • Highsmith provided a game-winning goal with five seconds remaining to defeat PC 2-1
  • In the league Highsmith ranks tied for 7th in scoring (1.0 points per game) and tied for 5th in goals/goals per game
  • Freshman Valentina Mosquera is second on the team in scoring with eight points
  • Mosquera had a goal and assisted on the Highsmith goal in the final seconds vs. PC
  • Izzy Giarrizzi ranks third in the league in saves/saves per game, 4th in save percentage and 5th in goals against average
  • Senior Lauren Uptegrove was unable to make her 50th collegiate appearance on Saturday at Radford after suffering an injury in the win over PC and her status is unknown for Wednesday
  • Freshman Adelle Pruitt missed her second straight game at Radford and her status is unknown against the Bucs
  • Senior Bella Hovis is set to make her 50th appearance for the Eagles and against the Buccaneers
  • This will be the 345th game in Winthrop women's soccer program history
  • Spencer Smith is in his 12th season as head coach and coached in his 200th game for the Eagles on Sept. 25 vs. USC Upstate
  • Smith is currently fifth all-time in Big South history for victories (seven wins behind 4th)

BIG SOUTH AWARDS
Abbie McCrea – Freshman of the Week
  • McCrea led the team with four points on the week in two road games
  • Started the week with a late goal in the 3-2 loss at High Point
  • Followed that up with two assists in the 4-1 win at Hampton
Anna Kate Highsmith – Freshman of the Week
  • Scored three goals in two games to help the team to two victories
  • Scored the game-winning goal in the 89th minute in the win at Gardner-Webb
  • Scored two goals in the final seven minutes of the game in the 2-0 win over USC Upstate
Jessica Gengler – Defensive Player of the Week
  • Scored the game-winning goal (golden goal) in the 3-2 win over Alabama State in the season opener
  • Played outside back in the game as she netted her first collegiate goal
Emma Smith – Freshman of the Week
  • Came off the bench to score the team's second goal for a 2-0 lead
  • Played a total of 40 minutes in the game, including starting the second half

TEAM CAPTAINS
Senior's Laurin Uptegrove and Bella Hovis have been named team captains for the 2021 season. Both Uptegrove and Hovis have been regulars either off the bench or in the starting lineup in their first three seasons.
LOOKING AHEAD
Winthrop will return home for its final two contests of the regular season starting with Campbell on Saturday, Oct. 16 at 1 p.m. It will be "Senior Day" as a recognition
