Eagles Soar To 10-0 Start With Win Over Gardner-Webb

Rock Hill, S.C. – Adonis Arms came off the bench for a team-high 17 points to help Winthrop earn a 75-65 victory over Gardner-Webb, Saturday afternoon at the Winthrop Coliseum. The victory is the 15th straight for the Eagles, who are also off to a 7-0 start in conference play for a second straight year.

FIRST HALF
  • Both teams got off to a slow start shooting the ball as Gardner-Webb started 0-for-6 and the Eagles started 2-for-10
  • After a scoreless two and a half minutes the Runnin' Bulldogs got on the scoreboard as Jacob Falko raced down the court and finished with a flush
  • Winthrop hit back-to-back threes from Adonis Arms and a Jaheam Cornwall triple made it a 6-6 game at the 15:27 mark
  • The game remained tight over the next seven minutes as the Eagles held a 15-14 edge with just under eight to play
  • With 7:34 remaining Arms scored on a stick back and then following a turnover Arms drilled a three to spark a 7-0 run which was capped off by Micheal Anumba scoring off the drive
  • D.J. Burns jumper with 4:27 left pushed the Winthrop lead to nine points, but an 8-0 run by Gardner-Webb made it a one point game
  • Jordan Sears scored off the drive to start the run and capped it off with a three off the break to make it a 25-24 lead for the Eagles
  • Winthrop responded with a 10-0 run to end the half and lead 35-24 at the break
  • Anumba got it started with a three followed by a deep two from Josh Corbin from the right wing
  • Anumba followed with another triple, forcing a timeout by the Runnin' Bulldogs as the Eagles led by nine
  • Chandler Vaudrin made two free throws with 43 seconds left in the half to complete the run
  • Eagles shot 33 percent in the half while Gardner-Webb shot 30 percent
 
SECOND HALF
  • Eagles opened the second half with a three from Kyle Zunic to make it 13 straight points for a 38-24 lead
  • Gardner-Webb answered with a 10-0 run as Cornwall scored the first four points of the run with two free throws and a tough finish on the break
  • Falko scored four of the final six points of the run including a stick back off his own miss after Burns Jr. blocked the initial shot as the Eagles led 38-34 with 15:43 to play
  • Anumba put an end to the run as he worked his way into the lane and scored
  • That started an 11-run by the Eagles as Vaudrin followed with a jumper in the lane and then Arms knocked down three free throws for a 45-34 lead
  • After Vaudrin stole the ball on the ensuing possession he pushed the ball in transition and found Arms for three and a 48-34 lead forcing a timeout by Gardner-Webb
  • The Eagles maintained a double-figure lead for much of the next seven and a half minutes and led 62-51 with 6:29 to play after a Burns Jr. jumper inside the paint
  • Anthony Selden hit a three with 5:49 to play that started a 5-0 spurt to cut the Winthrop lead down to six points with just over five to play
  • The closest the Runnin' Bulldogs got the rest of the way was five points with 44 seconds left
  • Eagles made eight free throws over the final 1:23 to secure the victory
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Gardner-Webb finished the game shooting 35 percent while the Eagles shot 34 percent
  • Advantage on the boards went to the Eagles 48-44
  • Both teams committed 17 turnovers as Gardner-Webb turned them into 19 points while the Eagles had 17 points off turnovers
  • Winthrop finished the game 20-for-25 at the free throw line (80%) and 11-for-32 behind the arc
  • Runnin' Bulldogs were 14-for-21 at the line and 7-for-25 from three
  • Arms was 1-of-3 Eagles in double-figures as he tied his career-best with 17 points (4-for-5 from three)
  • Vaudrin had 12 points as he tied for the team-lead with seven rebounds and led with eight assists
 
NOTABLES
  • The 15 straight wins is the 3rd longest win streak in program history and longest in the Pat Kelsey Era
  • Last season (2019-20) the Eagles won 14 straight games
  • With the win, Kelsey earned his 100th Big South Conference victory and it is also the 100th home win during his tenure
  • Winthrop has now won nine straight Big South regular season games dating back to the 2019-20 season
  • The Eagles hit 11 or more threes in a game for the fourth time this season with all four during league action
