Eagles Open Season With 4-0 Start, Fall In Quarterfinals

Rock Hill, S.C. – Winthrop's League of Legends team got off to a fast start Saturday winning their first four matches in the Harrisburg University Esports Invitational before falling in the quarterfinals on Sunday.

The Eagles entered the weekend as one of the tournament's favorites in the eyes of many and did not disappoint. Winthrop was drawn into Group C alongside the University of California-Irvine A, Michigan and Illinois Wesleyan University B.

It was Winthrop's first meeting with both University of California-Irvine A and Michigan, while it was their second time facing Illinois Wesleyan. Their only previous matchup with IWU was back on October 19, 2019, when the Titans defeated Winthrop, 2-0. The Eagles avenged that loss and made quick work of their group stage foes, defeating each, 1-0.

The round of 16 directly followed the group stage and Winthrop was paired with another Big Ten opponent in Ohio State. It was the first meeting in program history with the Buckeyes, and Ohio State's strategy from the onset was to neutralize Kenji "Srkenji" Kaneko.  Winthrop's remaining talent took over the match, and the Eagles prevailed 2-0 to advance to Sunday's quarterfinals.

Sunday brought on Winthrop's toughest test of the weekend in Harrisburg University's B Team.  The tournament host eliminated Winthrop from the 2019 edition of the event and are consistently amongst the nation's best. Harrisburg came out of the gates hot and handed the Eagles their first loss of the fall season, 2-0.
