ROCK HILL, SC – The seventh-seeded Winthrop women's basketball team opens Big South Tournament play Tuesday night, hosting the tenth-seeded Upstate Spartans at 7 p.m. at the Winthrop Coliseum.

SEASON SERIES
This will be the third meeting between the Eagles and Spartans during the 2019-20 season. Winthrop left the G.B. Hodge Center with a 52-38 win on January 9, while the Spartans came to Rock Hill on the last day of the regular season and snapped a five-game losing skid with a 66-59 win. Miquela Santoro led the Eagles in their win with 14 points, with Jah'Che Whitfield and Kem Nwabudu each chipping in 11 of their own. Nwabudu also grabbed a game-high nine boards. Quadijah Moore was the lone Spartan in double-figures when they played at home, totaling 12 points. Brianna Lewis and Riley Popplewell posted 26 and 20 points respectively in the season finale win over Winthrop. Popplewell also grabbed 17 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the season. Kem Nwabudu was a big factor for the Eagles with her 16-point, 12-rebound performance. Anika Riley and Maleeah Langstaff each contributed 10 points. Winthrop led at halftime by six the first meeting and held on for the win, while these teams were tied at 31 with Upstate pulling away in the final two quarters.

WHAT'S UP NEXT
The winner of Tuesday's first-round matchup will advance to the tournament quarterfinals. The winner will face No. 2 Radford on Thursday at 6 p.m. on the Highlander's home floor. 

BIG SOUTH CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT 
The Big South Women's Tournament is using a dual pod system this year as the top two seeds will host quarterfinal and semifinal contests.  Semifinals will be contested at Campbell and Radford on Friday with the championship coming Sunday at the highest remaining seed.
