Winthrop Throttles Georgia State To Win PantherLAN

Rock Hill, S.C. - Despite not being able to compete in the Winthrop Esports Lab on campus due to COVID-19, Winthrop's League of Legends squad was able to win the PantherLAN tournament hosted by Georgia State.

Amidst a great start to the spring season, Winthrop's League of Legends squad has had to face the challenges the rest of the sporting world has dealt with over the past several weeks due to the Coronavirus.  The Eagles' Collegiate League of Legends season has been put on hold after the Eagles defeated UT Dallas 3-2 on March 13.

Since then, Winthrop's Esports athletes have all left campus like the rest of their fellow student-athletes, but luckily, they have still been able to compete.  The Eagles entered PantherLAN hosted by Georgia State and won the tournament by defeating the Georgia State Panthers, 3-0 in the championship match.

"It was great to get back into competition this weekend, and the team played well," said coach Josh Sides. "Having everyone playing remotely from their respective homes presents a little bit of a new challenge, but we are glad to be able to keep competing online. It also gives Winthrop fans a way to continue to support and cheer on their Eagles while they remain safely sheltered at home."

Winthrop's next official completion is scheduled for April 25 when they are set to battle Maryville in the finals of the winner's bracket of the ASU GSV 2020.
