Eagles Fall 2-0 At 16th-Ranked South Carolina Wednesday Evening

Columbia S.C.—  Winthrop softball dropped a close game at 16th-ranked South Carolina Wednesday evening, falling 2-0.

WHAT HAPPENED
  • Gamecocks grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second on a solo homerun by Jana Johns to left center
  • Karly Heath doubled to lead off the third for South Carolina and three batters later scored on a single to right by Mackenzie Boesel
  • Eagles loaded the bases in the fourth inning as Sabrina Shroades led off with a single and moved to second when Ashley Westbrooks walked
  • Ansley Gilreath sacrificed the runners over and then Madyson Watson walked to load the bases
  • Taylor Charlton stood in and line a 2-2 pitch to second base that turned into an inning-ending double play
  • Shroades was hit to lead off the sixth as she moved into scoring position on a ground out
  • Watson fouled out to second and Charlton struck out to end the threat
  • Watson finished the game tossing six innings allowing two runs on five hits with no walks and strikeout
  • Heath also tossed a complete game for South Carolina as she allowed the two hits with four walks and seven strikeouts
EXTRA BASES
  • Eagles have been shutout in back-to-back games for the first time this season (Only two games they haven't scored all season)
  • Winthrop left six runners on base in the game and hit into two double plays
ON DECK
Winthrop heads to Clearwater, Fla. in two days for the Clearwater Spring Break Invitational Mar. 13-15. Eagles open play Friday afternoon against Army (noon) and UT-Chattanooga (2:30 p.m.).
