Eagles Season Comes To An End With 60-57 Loss To Upstate

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Winthrop women's basketball's season has come to a close with a 60-57 loss to the Upstate Spartans in the First Round of the Big South Tournament. They finish with an 11-18 overall record and an 8-12 mark in conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Spartans led by as many as five points in the first quarter but a 7-3 run for the home team cut the Spartans lead to just one after 10 minutes. Myra Strickland had six of Winthrop's 10 second-quarter points, while the team held Upstate to just nine. A layup from Strickland at the 1:04 mark of the second quarter tied the game at 26. The teams were tied at 26 at halftime. Spartans took a six-point lead at the 3:01 mark of the third quarter off a Maya Timberlake layup, 40-34, but a 9-3 run to close out the third once again cut the Spartans lead to just one point. Maleeah Langstaff sank a layup with 5:49 remaining to give the Eagles an eight-point lead. The Spartans held the Eagles scoreless and a Riley Popplewell jumper tied the game at 54 with 2:13 to play. Senior Miquela Santoro responded with a huge 3-pointer to regain the lead. The Spartans ended the game on a 6-0 run. Myra Strickland attempted a game-tying 3-pointer with 9 seconds on the clock and it just fell short. The Eagles finished the game shooting 34 percent from the field, 20 percent from behind the arc and 73 percent from the line.
