Eagles Host Campbell Thursday Night On ESPNU

Rock Hill, S.C.— Winthrop men's basketball is set to host Campbell on ESPNU Thursday night at the Winthrop Coliseum, the third Big South Conference ESPNU Wild Card Selection of the season.

SERIES HISTORY
  • Winthrop and Campbell meet for the second time this season and the 42nd time overall
  • Eagles won the first meeting 87-72 in Buies Creek, NC on Jan. 4
  • Campbell leads the all-time series 21-20, but Winthrop has won three straight and seven of the last eight meetings
  • Since Campbell rejoined the Big South in 2011-12, the Eagles are 10-6 head-to-head

  • Winthrop puts its 12-game winning streak on the line while Campbell looks to end a four-game skid
  • It's a battle of the league's top offense against the conference's second best defense
  • Winthrop ranks first in scoring margin (+11.5), rebounding offense (41.0), rebound margin (+7.1), assists per game (16.3), offensive rebounds (13.7), defensive rebounds (27.3) and three-point field goals per game (9.4)
  • Campbell leads the league in free throw percentage (.746) and is in the Top 3 of scoring defense (68.0), scoring margin (+1.7), three-point field goal percentage defense (.319), assists per game (14.8), steals (8.1), and turnover margin (+2.45)
  • Eagles have a scoring margin of +18.2 in league play only while the second best is Radford at +3.5
  • Tonight's game starts a stretch of three games in five days for both teams as the Eagles head to Longwood Saturday and host Radford on Monday while Campbell returns home against Presbyterian College Saturday and heads to Longwood on Monday

  • Head coach Pat Kelsey is in his 8th season with the Eagles (155-90)

  • The victory at Charleston Southern gave Kelsey 88 league wins all-time as he remains 8th all-time

  • Winthrop is 9-2 at home this year, 5-0 in league play
  • Eagles finished the month of January at 9-0, which is the first undefeated January in program history
  • The nine wins are the most by a Winthrop team in the month of January
  • Josh Ferguson is closing in on 1,000 career points, just nine away as he enters Thursday's game
  • Hunter Hale and D.J. Burns Jr. lead the team in scoring at 12.9 ppg and 12.8 ppg respectively
  • Hale has double-figures in 8-of-10 league games and Burns Jr. recently posted a career-high 23 points at Charleston Southern
  • Burns Jr. is leading the team over the last five games scoring 16.6 ppg and shooting 68 percent from the floor
  • Chandler Vaudrin led the Eagles in the win over Campbell last month with 16 points, eight assists and three steals while Burns Jr. had 15 and Josh Ferguson added 12
  • This past Monday the Eagles went jumped to 21st in the latest CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top 25 Poll and received one vote in the AP Top 25 Poll
 
CAMPBELL
  • Camels are led by Kevin McGeehan in his 7th season (102-118)
  • Campbell is the 2018-19 defending Big South regular season champions after a 20-13 mark that included a league record of 12-4
  • Camels are wrapping up a stretch with 4-of-5 games on the road
  • This season the Camels are 5-6 on the road with the last road win coming Jan. 8 at UNC Asheville
  • Sophomore Cedric Henderson Jr. leads a balanced attack for Campbell at 12.2 ppg and is second on the team with 4.1 rpg
  • Jordan Whitfield averages 9.9 ppg followed by Cory Gensler (9.5 ppg), and Ja'Cor Nelson (9.1) ppg
  • In the first meeting Campbell had four players in double-figures led by Whitfield's 15 as Nelson added 14, Henderson had 13 and LaDarius Knight chipped in with 10
 
FERGUSON MAKING HIS MARK
Josh Ferguson reached the 500 rebound mark at the end of the 2018-19 season and became the 58th player in Big South Conference history to reach 600 rebounds. Ferguson pulled down eight rebounds in the win over Elon to reach exactly 600 rebounds for his career. He currently ranks 7th all-time in program history and is on pace to finish 3rd all-time. Ferguson is also closing in on 1,000 career points as he currently has 991 and looking to become the 26th player in program history to reach that mark.
 
TRIPLE-DOUBLE FOR VAUDRIN
Chandler Vaudrin had 10 points, 12 rebounds and 11 assists in the league-opening win over Longwood on Jan. 2. It was the first triple-double by a Winthrop player since Xavier Cooks had 11 points, 15 rebounds and 11 assists against Reinhardt. Vaudrin nearly averaged a triple-double over the first two games of Big South action as he posted 16 points, 7 rebounds and 8 assists at Campbell. It was the second triple-double of the season in the Big South and 13th nationally at the NCAA D1 level. For his efforts against Longwood and Campbell he was named the Big South Conference Co-Player of the Week. He is currently the active leader overall NCAA divisions for career triple-doubles (5).
 
HALE REACHES 1,000 CAREER POINTS
Hunter Hale surpassed 1,000 points in his collegiate career after scoring 17 points in the loss at Furman. Hale's career began at Central Michigan and this last spring Hale transferred to the Eagles from Grand Valley State to begin graduate school and arrived with 926 points in his career. This season Hale is averaging 12.9 ppg as he's started 20-of-21 games he's played this season.
 
WINTHROP SPORTS SHOW AT ROCO
Joins us on Mondays at The Roasting Company throughout the basketball season will be the Winthrop Sports Show at ROCO hosted by the voices of the Winthrop Eagles Dave Friedman and Mike Pacheco. The two will sit down weekly with head coaches Pat Kelsey and Lynette Woodard as well as other selected guests throughout the season. The show is from 6-6:30 p.m. and airs live on 94.3 FM & 104.1 The Bridge.
