LAST TIME OUT
Winthrop traveled to Charleston and left with a 58-53 win. The Eagles had four players finish the contest in double figures, led by
Jah'Che Whitfield who recorded a 14-point, 12-rebound double-double. That was Whitfield's second double-double of her collegiate career.
Maleeah Langstaff,
Destinee Jamison-Whitfield and
Anika Riley finished with 10 points a piece. Sharita Godfrey led CSU's offense with 16 points. She also contributed 11 rebounds for the first double-double of her collegiate career. Winthrop took a 13-point lead in the second quarter, its largest lead of the night, and held a 26-19 lead at halftime. CSU took a one-point lead off a Godfrey jump shot with 3:35 remaining in the third. The visitors regained the lead off a jumper from Langstaff with a minute remaining in the quarter. Winthrop put up a 17-point fourth quarter to secure the win.
WINTHROP
The Eagles are coming off a 94-61 loss to the High Point Panthers on Saturday afternoon. Winthrop had four players finish in double figures:
Maleeah Langstaff (15),
Jah'Che Whitfield (13),
Kem Nwabudu (13) and
Miquela Santoro (10). The Eagles struggled to find a solution for High Point's Camryn Brown who set a program and conference record with 44 points. The senior was 16-of-22 from the field, 10-of-16 from 3-point range, both school records in the Division 1 era. The team finished the game shooting 39 percent from the field, 31 percent from behind the arc and 82 percent from the line – a season best.
CHARLESTON SOUTHERN
The Buccaneers are coming off a 67-45 loss to Gardner-Webb on Saturday afternoon. A 19-0 run in the first quarter quickly gave the Runnin' Bulldogs a comfortable lead, while capitalizing on 15 CSU turnovers in the first half for 21 points. Tori Gittens was the only Buccaneer to finish the game in double figures with 10 points. Tierra Steede and Carmella Walker contributed five boards each. CSU is on a five-game losing streak since winning its only conference contest against UNC Asheville on Jan. 14.
500-REBOUND CLUB HAS A NEW MEMBER
Anika Riley eclipsed 500 career rebounds during Winthrop's game against Gardner-Webb on Monday, Jan. 6. The junior guard is the 18th player in Winthrop women's basketball history to record 500+ career rebounds. Riley is ranked seventh in the conference, averaging 6.6 boards a game.
