Eagles Host Hampton Saturday Afternoon

Rock Hill, S.C.— With the end of the regular season coming to a close in a little over a week, Winthrop men's basketball plays two of its final three games at home starting with Hampton on Saturday, Feb. 22 at 1 p.m.

SERIES HISTORY
  • This is the second meeting between Hampton and Winthrop as the Eagles look for a regular season sweep
  • Winthrop is 6-3 all-time against the Pirates after winning 116-95 on Jan. 16 in Hampton
  • Eagles have scored at least 100 points in each of the last two meetings at the Winthrop Coliseum and three of the last five meetings overall
 
THE GAME
  • Both teams enter the game with conference tournament seeding on the line
  • Winthrop aims to remain in first place with Radford while Hampton hopes to stay in third place with a win
  • This game will feature the top two offenses in the league as Winthrop leads at 80.4 ppg and Hampton is second at 77.5 ppg
  • It's also a matchup with two of the top offensive rebounding teams in the league
  • The Pirates feature the top two scorers in the conference in Jermaine Marrow (24.3 ppg) and Ben Stanley (21.9 ppg)
 
WINTHROP       
  • Head coach Pat Kelsey is in his 8th season with the Eagles (158-92)
  • Kelsey ranks 5th all-time in Big South history in career wins and is now two wins away from tying Nield Gordon for 2nd all-time in program history
  • The victory at Longwood gave Kelsey 91 league wins all-time as he remains 8th all-time
  • Sitting at 13-2 in the league for the first time in league history, a half-game ahead of Radford at 13-2
  • Eagles are winning league games by a margin of +12.4
  • Hunter Hale leads three Eagles in double-figures at 12.6 ppg while D.J. Burns Jr. is next at 12.3 ppg and Josh Ferguson is averaging 10.9 ppg
  • Hale also leads the team with 14.5 ppg in league play while Burns Jr. is scoring 13.5 ppg and Chandler Vaudrin averages 10.1 ppg (also 5.9 rpg and 5.9 apg vs. league opponents)
  • Hale is now second in the Big South with 2.4 threes per game
  • Ferguson is three rebounds away from 700 in his career, which would make him the third Eagle to reach that mark and the 36th player in league history
  • Eagles are 7-1 at home in league play and looking for the 11th home win on the year
  • Sitting on 13 league wins for the sixth time in program history (3rd time under Kelsey)
  • Eagles remained in the latest CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top 25 Poll at 22nd
 
HAMPTON
  • Pirates are led by 11th-year head coach Ed Joyner Jr. (183-171)
  • Hampton is coming off an 87-77 win at home over Gardner-Webb
  • The win moved the Pirates into third-place tie with the Runnin' Bulldogs
  • The Pirates will have to turn around quickly from the Winthrop game and face Gardner-Webb on Monday as the two teams will play the second half of their game from Jan. 20 that was suspended
  • Marrow is not only the team's and league's leading scorer, he also leads the Big South in assists per game (6.2)
  • Marrow is scoring 24.0 ppg in league play to go along with 6.5 assists
  • Marrow is coming off 33 points in the win over Gardner-Webb
  • Stanley is the only other player in the league averaging 20 or more points per game (21.9) and is averaging 22.6 ppg
  • Stanley has led the team in scoring 15 times this season and four of the last seven games
  • Pirates are 1-12 on the road this season, 1-6 in league play with that lone victory coming at UNC Asheville (88-86)
 
FERGUSON MAKING HIS MARK
Josh Ferguson reached the 500 rebound mark at the end of the 2018-19 season and became the 58th player in Big South Conference history to reach 600 rebounds. Ferguson pulled down eight rebounds in the win over Elon to reach exactly 600 rebounds for his career. He currently ranks 3rd all-time in program history and is now three away from 700. Ferguson became the 26th player in program history to reach 1,000 career points and currently has 1,030 as he trails Pierre Wooten for 23rd on the list by six points.  
 
TRIPLE-DOUBLE FOR VAUDRIN
Chandler Vaudrin had 10 points, 12 rebounds and 11 assists in the league-opening win over Longwood on Jan. 2. It was the first triple-double by a Winthrop player since Xavier Cooks had 11 points, 15 rebounds and 11 assists against Reinhardt. Vaudrin nearly averaged a triple-double over the first two games of Big South action as he posted 16 points, 7 rebounds and 8 assists at Campbell. It was the second triple-double of the season in the Big South and 13th nationally at the NCAA D1 level. For his efforts against Longwood and Campbell he was named the Big South Conference Co-Player of the Week. He is currently the active leader overall NCAA divisions for career triple-doubles (5).
 
HALE REACHES 1,000 CAREER POINTS
Hunter Hale surpassed 1,000 points in his collegiate career after scoring 17 points in the loss at Furman. Hale's career began at Central Michigan and this last spring Hale transferred to the Eagles from Grand Valley State to begin graduate school and arrived with 926 points in his career. This season Hale is averaging 12.4 ppg as he's started 25-of-26 games he's played this season.
 
WINTHROP SPORTS SHOW AT ROCO
Joins us on Mondays at The Roasting Company throughout the basketball season will be the Winthrop Sports Show at ROCO hosted by the voices of the Winthrop Eagles Dave Friedman and Mike Pacheco. The two will sit down weekly with head coaches Pat Kelsey and Lynette Woodard as well as other selected guests throughout the season. The show is from 6-6:30 p.m. and airs live on 94.3 FM & 104.1 The Bridge.
