LAST TIME OUT
Winthrop opened Big South Conference play at home against Hampton, winning the contest 72-66 and extending its winning streak to three games. Four Eagles finished in double figures, led by
Destinee Jamison-Whitfield with 17 points.
Maleeah Langstaff notched 12 points of her own and 12 rebounds for the first double-double of her career. Laren VanArsdale led the offense for Hampton with a game-high 20 points.
WINTHROP
The Eagles are coming off a 56-46 win at home to the Charleston Southern Buccaneers. Winthrop came back from a 15-point deficit to complete the comeback and season sweep. The Eagles offensive efforts were led by
Jah'Che Whitfield with 17 points.
Kem Nwabudu (16) and
Maleeah Langstaff (13) also finished in double figures.
Anika Riley had a game-high 10 rebounds. Winthrop trailed by 13 points at halftime, but held their opponents to single digits in the last two quarters of play, six and five points respectively. The Buccaneers kept it a one-possession game for most of the fourth quarter but a 7-0 run in the remaining 1:24 secured the 10-point win.
HAMPTON
The Pirates had four players in double figures in their loss to Gardner-Webb on Saturday, 70-59. Laren VanArsdale led the offensive efforts with 17 points, while Nylah Young notched a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Ashley Bates and MaKayla Timmons each recorded 10 points. The Pirates led by seven after 10 minutes of play but were outscored 18-5 in the second quarter to trail 31-25 at halftime. Hampton was outscored 17-14 in the third and 22-20 in the fourth to fall to 8-5 in conference play.
500-REBOUND CLUB HAS A NEW MEMBER
Anika Riley eclipsed 500 career rebounds during Winthrop's game against Gardner-Webb on Monday, Jan. 6. The junior guard is the 18th player in Winthrop women's basketball history to record 500+ career rebounds. Entering Tuesday's contest, Riley has 559 career rebounds and is ranked seventh in the conference, averaging 6.8 boards a game.
