Vaudrin's Triple-Double Helps Eagles To 4-0 Start In Big South Action

Rock Hill, S.C. – Chandler Vaudrin posted his second triple-double of the season to pace Winthrop in a 94-76 win over Campbell, Thursday afternoon in Big South Conference men's basketball action.

FIRST HALF
  • Micheal Anumba scored the Eagles first basket of the game for a second straight day as they hit their first four shots to open an early 9-5 lead
  • Nearly the entire six and a half minutes it was a one possession game until the Eagles inched their way to a six point advantage with 12:34 left
  • Trailing 12-11 at the 15:43 mark, Anumba buried a three to start a 9-2 run to gain the six point lead
  • Looking to push it to a two possession lead during the run, Charles Falden pulled up for three but was off the mark and Chase Claxton came flying for a stick back dunk
  • Campbell followed with basket inside form Milos Stajcic but on the next possession Falden drained a three for the 20-14 lead
  • With just under 10 to play in the half Campbell's Messiah Thompson cut the lead in half with a three only to have Josh Corbin come right back and push the lead back to six with a triple
  • On the next possession Vaudrin found D.J. Burns Jr. inside for an eight point advantage
  • Kelton Talford gave the Eagles their biggest lead of the first 13 minutes as he scored on a put back while being fouled and completed the three-point play
  • After forcing a turnover, Kyle Zunic drove to the basket and scored off glass for the first double-figure lead of the game for Winthrop
  • Jordan Whitfield hit two free throws to push the lead back to single-digits but that was short lived as Vaudrin scored two baskets in the lane for a 36-23 lead with four and a half remaining
  • Winthrop held its double-figure lead the rest of the way and led 47-35 at the break
  • The Eagles shot 65 percent from the field while holding Campbell to 43 percent
SECOND HALF
  • Burns Jr. hit a short jumper to open the second half, but Campbell responded with an 11-2 run to make it a five point game at the 16:01 mark after Whitfield hit two free throws as he scored five points during the run
  • It was a five point game with 15:05 left, but the Eagles used a 7-1 run to push the lead back to double-figures as another Falden three made it a 60-49 lead
  • Campbell's Cedric Henderson responded with a three, but Falden came right back and scored on a short jumper in the lane
  • With 10:46 left in the game the Camels began to work their way back to a two possession game as the Eagles led 66-57 and three straight free throws from Campbell made it a 66-60 game with nine and a half to go
  • The Eagles were 0-for-5 from the field in the stretch that allowed the Camels to make it a six point game, but then finished the game 9-of-14 from the field and 7-for-11 at the line to win by double-figures
  • Eagles dominated the glass 22-10 in the second half alone with eight offensive boards that led to 14 points

  • Eagles shot a season-high 59 percent for the game while Campbell finished shooting 44 percent
  • Winthrop was 9-of-20 from three and the Camels were 5-of-15
  • For a second straight game against the Camels the Eagles dominated the glass with a 41-19 advantage and outscored them 19-3 in second chance points
  • Winthrop did commit 19 turnovers that led to 19 points for Campbell
  • Vaudrin's second triple-double of the season paced six Eagles in double-figures
  • Burns Jr. and Arms had a team-high 15 points as Claxton added a season-high 14, Falden had 11 and Zunic chipped in with 10
  • The 13 rebounds for Vaudrin were a career-best and his 3rd game this year with 10 or more assists
  • Whitfield led four players in double-figures for Campbell with 20 points
  • Eagles also had a big advantage in the paint, outscoring the Camels 52-24
  • The bench for the Eagles had 41 points, the 4th time this season the bench had at least 41
 NOTABLES
  • The 7-0 start second only to Radford's 8-0 start in 1990-91 for the best start by a Big South Conference member
  • The Eagles have now won 12 straight games dating back to the 2019-20 season, tied for the 4th longest win streak in program history
  • Off to a 4-0 start in league play for a second straight season and the 5th time in program history
  • Winthrop has now won six straight against the Camels and now lead the series 23-21 all-time
  • This was the third triple-double Vaudrin has posted with the Eagles and seventh of his collegiate career
  • Vaudrin also surpassed 700 collegiate rebounds and now has 702 and is also just 17 away from 1,000 career points
