Vaudrin's Triple-Double Highlights Eagles 107-77 Win At Upstate Sunday Afternoon

Spartanburg, S.C. – Chandler Vaudrin's sixth career triple-double helped Winthrop capture its second victory in the last 24 hours after a 107-77 win at USC Upstate, Sunday afternoon inside he G.B. Hodge Center.

FIRST HALF
  • Charles Falden drained a three on Winthrop's first possession to open the scoring in the game
  • Falden's three led to an early 8-0 run as D.J. Burns Jr. scored on a jump hook and Adonis Arms drilled a three from the left wing
  • Spartans responded with five straight points as Tommy Bruner scored off a drive and Everette Hammond knocked down a three
  • Winthrop pushed its lead back to seven points after Micheal Anumba scored at the rim and Burns Jr. tipped in a missed shot by Jamal King
  • The Eagles led 22-16 after Falden scored off a drive, but then they went cold from the field
  • Spartans took advantage with a 7-0 run to grab a 23-22 lead with just under eight minutes remaining after Dalvin White's jumper
  • After Arms and Falden went 1-of-2 at the foul line the Eagles regained the lead at 24-23 and Chase Claxton's layup pushed the lead to 26-23
  • The teams went back and forth on the next few possessions as Bruner hit another three to tie the game at 26-26 but Falden came right back with another triple for a 29-26
  • Jatayveous Watson tied the game after he was fouled on a flush and hit the free throw to complete the three-point play with 5:45 left
  • At that point the Eagles outscored the Spartans 19-6 over the final five and a half minutes to lead 48-35 at the break
  • That included a 10-0 run to end the half that was capped off by a three at the buzzer
  • Winthrop had the final possession of the half as Kyle Zunic couldn't get his three to fall as Burns Jr. boarded the miss, kicked the ball out to Vaudrin at the top of the key and he drained a three as time expired
  • Eagles shot 49 percent for the half and were 7-for-19 behind the arc while Upstate was held to 41 percent shooting (6-for-17 from three)
  • Winthrop had 10 offensive rebounds in the first half that led to 13 second chance points 
SECOND HALF
  • Upstate came right of the break with a Bryson Mazone three as the two teams traded baskets over the first 3-4 minutes of the half
  • Leading 55-44, the Eagles went on a 17-2 run over the next four and a half minutes
  • It started with a 6-0 spurt that ended with two free throws from Hammond and then an 11-0 run highlighted by a three from Josh Corbin and two triples from Jamal King for a 72-46 lead with 13:34 to play
  • Following back-to-back buckets from the Spartans the Eagles reeled off seven straight points to push the lead to 79-50 with 10:54 to play
  • The Eagles kept the foot on the gas and pushed the lead to 30 points at 97-67 with four and a half minutes remaining
  • Winthrop shot 55 percent from the floor in the second half and was 9-for-20 from three while holding the Spartans to 42 percent from the field
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • For the game the Eagles shot 52 percent and connected on 16 threes (16-for-39)
  • Spartans shot 42 percent and were 12-for-32 behind the arc
  • It was the second straight day that both teams hit 10 or more threes
  • Winthrop dominated the glass with a 48-27 advantage and had 19 offensive rebounds that led to 28 second chance points
  • The bench had another big night pouring in 59 points, led by Adonis Arms with a season-high 17 points
  • Vaudrin joined Arms in double-figures with 13 points and he also grabbed 11 rebounds and dished out 14 assists to record a triple-double
  • D.J. Burns Jr. finished with 16 points on 8-of-9 shooting while Josh Corbin had 15 points and Charles Falden had 13 points
  • The Eagles forced 17 turnovers that led to 26 points and for the game the Eagles had 41 fast break points
  • Tommy Bruner had a game-high 23 points for the Spartans and Bryson Mozone had 20 points as they combined to go 8-for-18 behind the arc 
NOTABLES
  • Winthrop is 2-0 in league play for the second straight season
  • Eagles are 4-0 to start a season for the first time since the 2015-16 season
  • The win is the ninth straight for the Eagles dating back to the 2019-20 season
  • Vaudrin recorded his second triple-double of his Winthrop career and it is the 6th of his collegiate career
  • Vaudrin's 14 assists are one shy of his career-best and through four games he has 40 assists and just seven turnovers (now averaging a double-double at 12.5 ppg and 10.0 apg)
  • This is the first game hitting the century mark for the Eagles this season and the last time they did so was against Upstate in the Big South Tournament quarterfinals in a 106-70 win
  • The three-pointer Charles Falden made on the team's opening possession was the 100th of his career
  • Winthrop has now won the last 10 meetings and lead the series 15-8 all-time
  • After scoring 60 points in Friday's game, the Winthrop bench scored 59 points in today's win and the team is averaging 47.75 bench points so far this season
  • Corbin has hit double-figures in back-to-back games for the first time in his career and is 8-for-15 behind the arc in the last two games
  • The 16 threes are one shy of the program record for made threes against a Big South opponent
