LAST TIME OUT
The Eagles and Panthers met earlier in the season – on New Year's Eve at the Coliseum – where the home team won, 69-63. Winthrop overcame a 14 point deficit to win its fourth straight led by junior
Anika Riley who finished with a 19-point, 12-rebound double-double, the seventh of her collegiate career.
Miquela Santoro contributed 12 points, while
Maleeah Langstaff chipped in 11 boards of her own. Skyler Curran led the Panthers with 19 points and six rebounds. Callie Scheier (12) and Camryn Brown (10) also finished in double figures.
WINTHROP
The Eagles fell to UNC Asheville on Tuesday night at the Coliseum, 50-43. The offensive efforts were led by
Jah'Che Whitfield, who recorded 15 points and is ranked 14
th in the conference, averaging 11.5 points per game. Freshman
Myra Strickland notched a career-high 14 points, going 4-of-6 from 3-point range. The Bulldogs held the Eagles to just four first-quarter points and led by as many as 15 points. The Eagles were able to chip away at Asheville's lead but the deficit was too much to overcome. The Eagles are 5-5 in road games this season, beating USC Upstate and Charleston Southern on their home floor in conference play.
HIGH POINT
The Panthers had their four-game win streak snapped on Tuesday night with a 70-57 loss to Gardner-Webb. Camryn Brown led the offensive efforts with 14 points and five assists. Zaria Wright also finished in double figures with 11 points. Freshman Amaria McNear recorded a career-high eight blocks. Skyler Curran currently leads the Big South, averaging 17.3 points per game but the Runnin' Bulldogs were able to hold the sophomore to just eight points. The Panthers are now 8-11 overall and 6-4 in conference play. They are 4-2 at home this season and are 8-2 at home against the Eagles in their last 10 meetings.
500-REBOUND CLUB HAS A NEW MEMBER
Anika Riley eclipsed 500 career rebounds during Winthrop's game against Gardner-Webb on Monday, Jan. 6. The junior guard is the 18th player in Winthrop women's basketball history to record 500+ career rebounds. Riley is ranked seventh in the conference, averaging 6.6 boards a game.
