N. Charleston, S.C.— A big run midway through the second half helped Winthrop to an 11
th consecutive win as it defeated Charleston Southern 77-60, Thursday evening at the Buccaneer Field House.

FIRST HALF
- Eagles raced out to 12-3 lead two and a half minutes into the contest
- D.J. Burns Jr. scored nine straight points and Hunter Hale drilled a three to force a timeout by the Buccaneers
- Charleston Southern came out of the timeout with a Phlandrous Fleming three but the Eagles responded with a 9-2 run for a double-digit lead at 21-8
- Josh Ferguson's short jumper off glass put the Eagles ahead 18-8 for the double-figure lead and then a Burns Jr. bucket and a free throw from Micheal Anumba put the Eagles on top by 13
- From that point the Bucs outscored the Eagles 24-10 over the final 11:33
- Eagles finished the half 3-of-11 from the field and committed six turnovers in the final 9:37
- Winthrop finished shooting 38 percent (1-of-14 behind the arc) in the first half while Charleston Southern shot 41 percent
SECOND HALF
- Fleming scored the first five points of the second half for the Bucs to build a 36-31 lead
- Eagles answered with a 7-0 run to take the lead 38-37 with 16:29 to play on a Ferguson layup off an offensive rebound
- The lead changed a couple of times over the next few possessions and then Kyle Zunic gave Winthrop a 41-39 lead when he connected on a right wing three
- Ty Jones tied it at 41-41 with a deep jumper around the top of the key and then a three from Duncan LeXander in front of his own bench put the Bucs up 44-41
- Five straight points put the Eagles back on top 46-44 highlighted by a corner three from Zunic for the lead with 11:47 remaining
- Charleston Southern tied the game at 46-46 after two Fleming free throws with 11:08 to play
- The Eagles scored the next eight points that started with a big dunk from Ferguson followed by a steal and score from Russell Jones Jr.
- A free throw from Sadarius Bowser interrupted the run but then the Eagles made a 13-2 run to open the game up and lead by 20 with 5:25 left
- Jones Jr. scored nine points during the span that Winthrop outscored the Bucs 21-3
- During the big run of 21-3, Winthrop was 9-of-10 from the floor including three from behind the arc
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Winthrop finished the game shooting 48 percent after connecting on 58 percent in the second half
- Eagles won the battle on the boards 37-30 and finished with 12 second chance points
- After going 1-for-14 behind the arc in the second half, the Eagles were 8-for-17 in the second half and in the game outscored the Bucs 34-12 in the paint
- Burns Jr. led four Eagles in double-figures with his career-high 23 points
- Ferguson posted his 12th career double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds while Chandler Vaudrin and Jones Jr. chipped in with 11
- Jones Jr. also pulled down a career-best six rebounds and dished out three assists to lead the bench
- In the final 11:08 of the game, Winthrop outscored the Bucs 31-14
NOTABLES
- This was the 9th win of the month for the Eagles, a school record for wins in the month of January
- It's also the first time in program history a Winthrop team was undefeated in January
- Eagles are the first team since the 2010-11 Coastal Carolina team to start league play 9-0
- Winthrop extended its winning streak to 11 games, the fourth longest streak nationally and tied for the fourth longest win streak in program history
- Eagles are now 5-0 in league play on the road and now have seven road wins on the year
- Ferguson is now just 11 points away from 1,000 in his career and is 29 rebounds away from 700 in his career
