Eagles Head To Campbell Looking For 2-0 Start To League Play Saturday Afternoon

Rock Hill, S.C.— Winthrop heads to Campbell Saturday afternoon looking for a 2-0 start to Big South play for a second straight season and a fourth straight win.

  • This marks the 41st meeting between Winthrop and Campbell
  • Eagles have won two straight in the series, including last year's only meeting on Jan. 10, 2019 in Buies Creek, NC with a 90-86 win
  • Winthrop has won three of its last four visits to Gore Arena
  • Campbell leads the all-time series 21-19 and 17-15 in league matchups
  • The series dates back to Jan. 12, 1985 when the Eagles fell 44-41 to Campbell at the Cumberland County Civic Center
 
THE GAME
  • The Big South's second best offense faces the league's top defense
  • Winthrop is second in scoring at 79.1 and Campbell is allowing a league-low 63.4 ppg
  • After hitting 16 threes against Longwood, the Eagles increased their league-best average for threes per game to 9.9
  • Winthrop is second in the league in three-point field goal percentage while Campbell leads the Big South defending the arc at .260 (which ranks 7th nationally)
  • Following the win over Longwood the Eagles have now won three straight while Campbell is coming off a close loss at home to Gardner-Webb
  • The three-game win streak for the Eagles currently leads all Big South teams
  • Three of the top seven players in the league for steals per game will be on the floor Saturday as Cory Gensler of Campbell leads the Big South (2.2), Ja'Cor Nelson is 6th and Chandler Vaudrin of Winthrop is 7th
 
WINTHROP       
  • Head coach Pat Kelsey is in his eighth season with the Eagles (146-90)
  • Kelsey moved into a tie for 7th place for career wins in Big South history,
  • Riding a season-long win streak and looking to open league play 2-0 for a second straight year and the 11th time in program history
  • Vaudrin is coming off the program's second triple-double in the last six seasons as he posted 10 points, 12 rebounds and 11 assists in the win over Longwood
  • It was the second triple-double in the Big South this season and the 13th this season among NCAA D1 members
  • Hunter Hale broke out with a career-high 29 points in the league opener as he knocked down six threes
  • Josh Ferguson still leads the team in scoring at 13.4 per game while Hale is now second at 11.6 followed by D.J. Burns Jr. with 10.9 ppg
  • Burns Jr. is averaging 11.1 ppg in 10 games off the bench this season while shooting 58 percent
  • Vaudrin is leading the Big South with 5.9 apg as he is coming off a career-high 11 assists against Longwood
  • It was his second game this season with 10 or more assists
  • Winthrop's 9.9 threes per game average rank 17th nationally as Hale ranks 4th in the league at 2.3 per game and Ferguson is 6th at 2.1 per game
 
CAMPBELL
  • Camels are led by 7th-year head coach Kevin McGeehan (100-111), who led the program to a Big South Conference regular season title in 2018-19
  • Earned nine non-conference wins, the most among any league team heading into Big South play
  • Coming off a loss, but have won three of the last four and five of the last seven
  • Have a 4-2 road record with wins at Coastal Carolina, The Citadel, Florida Gulf Coast and Ohio
  • Led in scoring by Cedric Henderson Jr. with 12.5 ppg as he's shooting 65 percent from the floor, 58 percent from three (15-of-26) and 86 percent at the line (23-for-26)
  • Henderson Jr. has led the Camels in scoring six times, which have come in the last seven games
  • Gensler is second on the team in scoring at 9.3 ppg and tied for the team lead in assists (26)
  • Jordan Whitfield, who had 10 points off the bench in last year's matchup, is third on the team in scoring at 8.6 ppg
 
HALE REACHES 1,000 CAREER POINTS
Hunter Hale surpassed 1,000 points in his collegiate career after scoring 17 points in the loss at Furman. Hale's career began at Central Michigan and this last spring Hale transferred to the Eagles from Grand Valley State to begin graduate school and arrived with 926 points in his career. This season Hale is averaging 11.6 ppg as he's started 11-of-12 games he's played this season.
FERGUSON MAKING HIS MARK
Josh Ferguson reached the 500 rebound mark at the end of the 2018-19 season and became the 58th player in Big South Conference history to reach 600 rebounds. Ferguson pulled down eight rebounds in the win over Elon to reach exactly 600 rebounds for his career. He currently ranks 9th all-time in program history and is on pace to finish 3rd all-time. Ferguson is also closing in on 1,000 career points as he currently has 913 and looking to become the 26th player in program history to reach that mark.

Joins us on Mondays at The Roasting Company throughout the basketball season will be the Winthrop Sports Show at ROCO hosted by the voices of the Winthrop Eagles Dave Friedman and Mike Pacheco. The two will sit down weekly with head coaches Pat Kelsey and Lynette Woodard as well as other selected guests throughout the season. The show is from 6-6:30 p.m. and airs live on 94.3 FM & 104.1 The Bridge.
