Eagles Win Second Straight With 58-53 Win Over Charleston Southern

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Winthrop women's basketball has won its second consecutive game, this time at Charleston Southern, on Saturday afternoon, 58-53. The Eagles are now 6-3 in conference play and 9-9 overall.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Eagles started the game with a 10-3 run over the Buccaneers and help the home team to just eight first-quarter points. Winthrop took a 13-point lead in the second quarter, its largest of the night and took a 26-19 lead into the locker room at halftime. The Eagles were outscored in the second and third quarter and Charleston Southern chipped away at Winthrop's lead. CSU took a one point lead off a Sharita Godfrey jump shot with 3:35 remaining in the third. The visitors regained the lead off a jumper from Maleeah Langstaff with a minute remaining in the quarter. Winthrop put up a 17-point fourth quarter to secure the win. The team finished the game shooting 32 percent from the field, 18 percent from behind the arc and 71 percent from the line.

  • The Buccaneers had 16 turnovers against the Eagles, resulting in 12 points.
  • Winthrop had 18 points off the bench, 10 at the hands of Destinee Jamison-Whitfield.
  • The Eagles had four players finished in double figures, the first time since their game against Hampton on Dec. 28, 2019.
  • Jah'Che Whitfield recorded her second double-double of the season with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Her first came at NC Central where she recorded 14 points and 10 rebounds.

UP NEXT
Winthrop women's basketball will return home on Tuesday evening to host UNC Asheville. During the 2019-20 season the Eagles lost both contests to the Bulldogs, 70-36 on the road and 55-43 at home. Winthrop is 2-8 against Asheville in the last 10 meetings. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
