Eagles Fall On The Road At Wofford Friday Night

SPARTANBURG, SC— The Winthrop men's soccer team dropped its second straight contest as it fell 1-0 at Wofford College, Friday evening in its first game of the Big South/SoCON Challenge.

Game Recap
  • Neither team created many scoring chances in the first half
  • In the 11th minute, Wofford's Brandon Oddy collected a free ball in the box and struck a shot toward an open net but Miles Rapp stood tall, blocked the shot inside the six-yard box and deflected it over the end line for a corner
  • In the 27th minute, Eduardo Velasco dribbled into the box at an angle to the left of the goalkeeper
  • Velasco fired a shot after entering the area as he tried to beat Aidan McCormick to the near post but the shot was pushed wide
  • Wofford was the first to break through as it grabbed the lead in the 52nd minute
  • Sam Ross served a ball into the box and Alex Dennis was unmarked straight on from goal as he buried a shot into the left corner
  • Eagles did create a good chance to tie the game late as Jayden Mace served a ball in front of goal as Jonathan Foster made a run but just missed the connection as Foster extended his leg out 
Notables
  • This was the 38th meeting all-time between the two programs
  • In the series, the team that has won the last six meetings has recorded a shutout in the process
  • The Eagles were shutout for the first time this season 
Looking Ahead
The Eagles have a quick turnaround as they'll head to Eagle Field for the first home game of the regular season as they'll host Furman at 7 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 8.
