Rock Hill, S.C. – This weekend the Eagles head to Washington D.C to play three matches at the American Volleyball Classic hosted by American University. On Friday, the Eagles will take on the host team and Temple University, then the team will finish their weekend with a match against Ohio University on Saturday.

Winthrop Volleyball's Opening Weekend
Winthrop volleyball began their 2019 season 3-0 after winning the Cristi Curtis Invitational, at the Winthrop Coliseum. The Eagles had five set wins over Morehead State and Davidson, then swept North Carolina A&T to finish the weekend. Transfer,
Morgan Bossler, was named Big South Player of the Week after her efforts. The junior from Iowa Western tallied 26 kills with just two errors and 13 total blocks through the weekend.
American at a Glance
American went 2-1 in the opening weekend with wins over Howard and George Washington and a four-set loss to Hartford. They have been led by All Patriot League preseason selection, Helena Elbaek (OH). Elbaek recorded a weekend high 34 kills against Hartford and finished with 78 kills and 38 digs over the weekend. American, who is the favorite to win the Patriot League, came up just short in last year's championship match in a five-set loss to Navy.
Temple at a Glance
The Temple Owls started their season perfect, sweeping Fairfield, Lafayette, and UMBC in the UMBC Invitational. Gem Grimshaw led the Owls with 21 kills in nine sets with just three errors. Averi Salvador led the backrow efforts with 41 total digs, 6.83 per set. Last season, the Owls finished with an overall record of 8-22, 5-13 in the American Conference. Winthrop last played Temple in 1995, a 3-0 loss for the Eagles. This will be the first meeting with American University and Ohio University.
Ohio Univeristy at a Glance
Ohio University is 1-4 on the season, their lone win coming over Northeastern. The Bobcats were picked to finish third in Mid Atlantic Conference (MAC) preseason polls. They also had three players land on the MAC All-Conference team: setter, Vera Giacomazzi, outside hitter, Lizzie Stephens, and middle blocker, Tia Jimerson. Stephens has 40 kills and 37 digs on the season and Giacomazzi recorded 145 assists, 9.67 assists per set, and just 33 digs.
