Rock Hill, S.C. – Winthrop volleyball pushed their win streak to 7-0 and remain perfect at home with a four-set win over Charleston Southern (26-24, 32-34, 25-17, 25-16) on Saturday afternoon. The win moves the Eagles to 10-3 overall and 2-0 in Big South Conference play; The loss drops CSU to 9-7, 1-1.
How it Happened
In the first set the Eagles managed a 10-5 lead, but CSU went on a scoring run after a timeout to tie the set 11-11. The Buccaneers matched the Eagles point for point right down to the wire. The Eagles reached set point first off a CSU attack error. A kill from CSU's Brooke Monssen saved the set and tied the score 24-24. The Eagles rattled off two straight points for the first set victory.
The second set was an all-out battle with 17 ties and eight lead changes. At 21-19 CSU, Winthrop rattled off four straight points out of a timeout and looked poised to take a 2-0 set lead. CSU battled back and it would take 16 extra points before a Monssen kill closed out the set and tied the match, 1-1.
The Eagles regrouped to come back for a third set win and a 2-1 match lead. Winthrop had 19 team kills with just two errors in the set, hitting at a clip of .515.
A hot start in the fourth set put the Eagles on track for yet another home victory. They had a 7-1 lead when CSU called their first timeout. Three straight kills from
Morgan Bossler completed the four-set win.
Inside the Box Score
Bossler led the Eagles with a team high 13 kills (.360) and match high, nine blocks. The middle blocker also picked up seven digs and two service aces.
Emily Wunder, Kia Benitez, and
Jace Kleffner joined Bossler with double digit kills, 11, 11, and 10. Wunder also had five blocks and Benitez had yet another double-double with 13 digs.
Jana Owens finished with her first double-double of the season with 23 assists and 11 digs.
Brooke Monssen had a match high, 25 kills for CSU and Skylar Blackmon finished with 25 digs.
