Eagles Top Elon In Straight Sets On The Road

Elon, N.C. – Volleyball handled their midweek business trip in efficient fashion, topping Elon in straight sets (25-21, 25-15, 26-24). This win is the third straight road sweep and moves them to 6-3 on the season. The Eagles snapped Elon's four-game win streak, which included a five-set win over ACC member, Wake Forest.

How it Happened
Winthrop went on a 4-0 run in the first set and maintained a comfortable lead throughout the set. The Eagles had just one attacking error in the set, while Elon committed four. Two of those errors came in the final four points.

The Eagles carried their momentum into the second set jumping out to a 7-1 lead. The Phoenix struggled to put together an offensive rhythm, committing ten attack errors as a team. The Eagles presented a strong defensive front, picking up three blocks in the set. They continued their efficient attacking, finishing with a .333 team hitting percentage.

The home team made a run in the third set that made an Eagle sweep look unlikely. The Eagles took back the set lead, 22-18, after trailing early on. Winthrop errors, coupled with two Elon kills, brought the set within one point. The score was notched at 24-24 but Kia Benitez and Camila Gomez got the job done with back to back kills.

Inside the Box Score
Benitez led the Eagles with 12 kills (.281) and 11 digs for her fifth double-double of the season. Siani Yamaguchi continues to lead her team with efficient set accuracy and staunch defense. She finished with 32 assists, 11 digs, and set her team to a .324 hitting efficiency. Bossler finished with nine kills and completed her fourth match with one attacking error or less, with just one error on the night.

Elon was led by Leah Daniel, who finished with 14 kills and an efficiency of .237. Kellyn Trowse had a match high, 12 digs.
