Volleyball Sweeps Southern Miss To Start The Georgia Southern Invitational

Box Score Statesboro, G.A. – The Eagles made quick work of Southern Miss, winning in straight sets 25-13, 27-25, 25-21 , in their opening match of the Georgia Southern Invitational. Morgan Bossler posted a Winthrop career high, 16 kills and just one error for a .455 hitting efficiency. 
 
How It Happened
The first set was a no doubter from the get go; the Eagles outscored Southern Miss 12-3 in the final stretch. Morgan Bossler scored half of her total kills in the opening set, finishing with 8 kills no errors. 
 
Southern Miss came back swinging in the second set, taking a 15-11 lead. The Eagles used a 5-0 run to reclaim the lead, 16-15. From there, the two teams traded points until Southern Miss reached their first set point. A kill from Bossler saved the set but a Winthrop error put Southern Miss back up by one. The Eagles rattled off three straight points to end the set and claim a two set lead. 
 
The third and final set was notched at 10 points even, but the Eagles went on another four-point run with two kills each from Bossler and Camila Gomez. The Eagles would maintain that lead and close out the match. 
 
Inside the Box Score
Along with Bossler's 16 kills, the middle blocker added eight digs and three blocks to the stat sheet. Kia Benitez and Makayla Doyle joined Bossler in the double-digit kill column, each with 11. Doyle remained errorless throughout the match, hitting a .478. Hannah Lackey lead the defensive efforts that held Southern Miss to just 31 kills and a .139 team hitting efficiency. Lackey finished with 19 digs for 6.33 digs per set.

The Eagles will finish the Georgia Southern Invitational tomorrow, September 14thwith a 1:00 p.m. match against the host team.
