Box Score ROCK HILL, SC - After three defeats opened the season for Winthrop women's soccer, the Eagles made a road statement on Thursday night, winning 5-1 at South Carolina State in Orangeburg for the team's first win of the 2019 season. Senior
Allie Thomas scored twice against the Bulldogs, her first first two goals of the season. Winthrop is now 1-3 on the season with the road victory and the Bulldogs drop to 1-4 on the year with the loss.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- In just the game's sixth minute, senior
Natalie Royaards notched her third goal of the season with a shot to the far post to give the Eagles an early 1-0 lead.
- After South Carolina State evened the score in the 11th minute, Winthrop reclaimed the lead at 2-1 when senior
Gabi Hull put in her first goal of the season from a nice feed from
Allie Thomas.
- Winthrop turned right around and made it a 3-1 game in the 23rd minute when
Allie Thomas headed in a corner kick from
Keeley Leising, who was credited with the assist on the play.
- Winthrop's fourth goal of the night was the second straight from
Allie Thomas, coming in the 51st minute, with
Keeley Leising assisting on the play for the second time, with the goal also coming on a corner kick.
- The Eagles put the cherry on top in the 82nd minute when sophomore
Lexi Sheely scored her first collegiate goal off the bench to make it a 5-1 match in favor of Winthrop.
NOTABLES
- The Eagles' five goals are the most scored in a match since October 8, 2014 when Winthrop defeated Asheville 5-0 on the road.
